O. Greenwood Obituary

MOUNT AIRY - O. Wayne Greenwood, 82, of 2070 Cynthia Drive, Mount Airy, passed away at his home Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, after a period of declining health. He was surrounded by his loving wife of 61 years, Sarah Frances Hill Greenwood, and their children, Ron Greenwood, Sharon and Joe Reid, and Craig Greenwood. He was born on Dec. 18, 1922, to Joseph Gordon and Martha Frances King Greenwood. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a 1/C Petty Officer/aviation metalsmith. After his discharge from service, he owned and operated Greenwood Floor Covering for more than 20 years, and later joined N.C. Foam Industries as a sales representative. He retired from there in 1990, and since that time enjoyed being in the company of his good friends and a special cousin, the late Joe Greenwood. He also liked visiting his 92-year-old aunt, Cora Shackelford, to sample her homemade chocolate fudge and famous pound cakes. Wayne had an avid interest in aviation and enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow pilots. In addition to flying, he was a well-known photographer who captured the beauty of God's earth and the people who passed this way. He was a lifelong member of Central United Methodist Church, where he attended services regularly as long as his health permitted. In the community, he was a charter member of the Mount Airy Elks Lodge 2016, a member of VFW Post 2019, and a former member of the Mount Airy Lions Club. Surviving are his wife, Sarah Frances Hill Greenwood, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Joe Reid, of Mount Airy; two sons, Ron Greenwood of Mount Airy and Craig Greenwood and wife, Nancy, of Sacramento, Calif.; three grandchildren, Alison Greenwood of New York City, Ryan Greenwood of East Carolina University, Greenville, and Sara Greenwood of Sacramento, Calif.; two sisters, Estelle Greenwood Belton and Eleanor Greenwood Powell, both of Mount Airy; a brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Joyce Greenwood, of Mount Airy; and a brother-in-law, Dr. Gideon D. Hill Jr., and wife, Margaret, of Fresno, Calif. He was loved and admired by special nieces and nephews, Garland Powell and Chuck and Kathy Powell Smith of Jamestown, Marty and Kay Powell Ashburn of Advance, Thomas and Tracy Greenwood of Mount Airy, Todd and Penny Greenwood of Winston-Salem, Ben and Libba Belton of Morganton, Darren Martin of Raleigh, Jim and Shauna Yager of Fresno, Calif., and Dr. Gideon D. Hill III of Philadelphia. In addition to his parents, Mr. Greenwood was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Judi Kiser Greenwood; and two brothers-in-law, Pete Powell and Clarence Belton. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. today at Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy. The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at Central United Methodist Church by Dr. Terry Matthews. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery, with full military rites by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 of Mount Airy and Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Northern Hospice, P.O. Box 1373, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or to Central United Methodist Church, 1909 N. Main St., Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Northern Hospice, and especially Cathy Childress, Sandra Lichvar and Fonda Younger of Northern Hospice for their loving care and support. Also, special thanks to caretakers Carolyn Davis and Debi Inman for their tender loving care.
