Robert Sprinkle Obituary

Sprinkle Jr., Dr. Robert Lee

July 13, 1932 - August 22, 2022

Dr. Robert Lee Sprinkle Jr., of Thomasville, NC, passed away Monday, Aug. 22, 2022, after an extended illness. "Doc" was born in Winston-Salem, in 1932, to Robert Lee Sprinkle Sr., and Elton Elizabeth Mitchell. After attending R.J. Reynolds High School, he graduated Salem College (1952), then pursued post graduate studies and received a Doctor of Surgical Chiropody (Podiatric Medicine) from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine (1956). After medical school, he returned home to Winston-Salem to set up practice and raise a family. Additionally, he completed his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) at Temple University/Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine (1970).

During his more than 50 years in medicine, he mentored many young physicians through his preceptor program. In addition, he served in leadership positions in the North Carolina Podiatric Medical Society and the American Podiatric Medical Association and the American Public Health Association. Operating offices in Winston-Salem, Mocksville and Thomasville, Dr. Sprinkle was loved by his patients.

He was very active in his community and was selected as the local Civitan "Man of the Year" in 1958. A charter member of the Stratford Club of Rotary International, he served as president and later, district governor and was a Paul Harris Fellow. Later, he became a member of the Thomasville Rotary Club.

'Doc' was an avid leader in Boy Scouts of America. He served as a Scoutmaster, then Commissioner of Old Hickory Council and then the Scouting Chairman of the Diocese of Charlotte. He received the Silver Beaver award and the St. George Award for distinguished service. A longtime member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church and Our Lady of the Highways in Thomasville, NC, he cherished his service in the Knights of Columbus.

He was an active member and past president of the Sons of the American Revolution (Bethabara Chapter), past NC Society president of the Sons of the Revolution, and member of the Sons of the Confederacy. In addition, he was a member of the St. Andrews Society of North Carolina. He was also an energetic supporter of Wake Forest University and member of the Deacon Club. He was an enthusiastic hunter and outdoorsman and a longtime member of the North State Game Club. In 2006, he was recognized for his lifetime service to his community and state and was honored to receive the Order of the Longleaf Pine.

"Doc" was a loving husband, father, grandfather and will be remembered for his keen sense of humor, his great storytelling and easy, gentlemanly friendship.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Denise, earlier this year; and his second wife, Nancy Dixon Hinshaw, in 2017. He is survived by his seven children Robert (Janine), Karen (Larry), Ralph (Beth), Richard (Sharon), Roy, Randy and Drouin; three stepchildren, Mike Hinshaw (Jane), Kim Moore (Eric) and Jeff Hinshaw (Renee); and six grandchildren, Bennett, Brooks, John, Libba, Caroline and Emma Grace.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the staffs of ComForCare home care, Amedisys Hospice and Brookridge Nursing home. Their loving professionalism helped us all though a very difficult transition. A burial service to honor our creator and the life of Dr. Sprinkle, will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 26, at Thomasville City Cemetery, Fr. Christopher Gober presiding.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winston-Salem Foundation, at 751 W 4th St. #200, Winston-Salem, NC 27101. Condolences may be made online at www.jcgreenandsons.com.

Drouin, Randy, Roy, Richard, Ralph, Karen and Bobby, it's so hard to loose both parents in close proximity and my heart aches for each of you. I'm reminiscing all the adventure, funny stories, love and laughter that surrounded Doc. Your Dad's character was larger than life, but what a life well led! I pray you all find peace today in saying goodbye to a wonderful man, but know he is celebrated in the heavens and laughing with all his old friends. He'd expect you to do the same; celebrate life and continue his legacy.
Love and prayers, Juliette
