Wesley Hood Obituary

Hood, Wesley

June 24, 1935 - March 21, 2024

Wesley D. Hood (Wes) was born at home in Greenacres, Washington on June 24, 1935, and died at home in Greensboro on March 21, 2024.

He is survived by his wife of over 5 decades, Rose, and their four children: Lelia (Russ) Savory, Van (Kim) Hood, Charles Hood, and Stephanie Gerringer; six beloved grandchildren: Wesley D. (Elizabeth) Hood, III, Tabitha Hood, Evan (Estefania) Hood, Emily Hood, Marlene Savory and Kinlin Gerringer; and three great-grandchildren: Connor Hood, Ethan Hood, and Sierra Wyatt. Wes was predeceased by his parents and his son Wesley D. Hood, Jr. He is also survived by his sister Elinor and his brother Bob (Judy). He has numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins that he also deeply loved. Wes was incredibly proud of his family.

Wes first left the Pacific Northwest when he enlisted in the Navy and served in the Korean War. As a veteran, the GI Bill gave him the opportunity to further his education in ways he never expected. A B.S. in Psychology from the University of Washington led to his first position at a high school, where he fell in love with teaching. He went on to obtain an M.A. in Counselor Education at the University of North Dakota and a doctorate in Psychology at Ball State University. His doctorate brought him south to North Carolina for a teaching position at Wake Forest University in the newly established Master's Degree in Counseling program. In 1969, he became one of the first NC state Licensed Psychologists. WFU was a wonderful experience for Wes because of his joy of teaching and the delight of making life-long friends. It is where he met and married Rose, the love of his life.

After WFU, Wes taught at the College of DuPage and Aurora College in Illinois and continued consulting with various mental health agencies. Upon returning to North Carolina, Wes & Rose established a private practice. Wes enjoyed serving as the psychologist for Greensboro's first Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, work he continued for 20 years. He served as the Rockingham County Mental Health Center Director of Child & Family Psychological Services for many years and continued consulting until age 84.

Wes wrote in his last wishes: "The single message I want to convey is my thanks to ALL my family & friends for the love, friendship, and meaningful 'connectedness' we have shared these years. You ALL have been and ARE beloved."

A Celebration of Life will be April 22, 2024, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 2105 West Market Street, Greensboro, NC at 2 p.m. A livestream will be available via the church website.

Wes loved his family more than anything or anyone on the earth. He was so proud of his children and all that they accomplished. He had high, but realistic expectations given their abilities. Grandchildren? Oh yes! Wes looked forward to them. Rose, Wes cherished you and the life you built together. I have no doubt he would have chosen you over and over again.

Rose, I am so sorry for your loss. Even though we saw you and Wes infrequently, you have always been special to me. I have wonderful memories of working with Wes in the 1970´s at Rockingham County MHC and meeting you when you were expecting your firstborn. It was my first job in counseling & he was a mentor, encouraged me to get my Master´s plus we commuted together from Greensboro to work in order to save gasoline/money. I always heard about you and the kids, so Wes loved all of you dearly! He will be missed.

Wes was my supervisor at Rockingham County Children's Mental health Services for more than twenty years. We became fast friends over those work-years and were frequent lunch buddies after our retirements. Wes was always a willing listener and a reliable source of insight into the work we did together.

In our retirement lunches we discussed our professional insights and experiences endlessly ; especially our concerns about so many children's developmental struggles and their families, hopes for the Counseling Field and heartfelt appreciation for every one of our co-workers in Children's Services.

We were two octogenarian guys from opposite coasts of the US who, surprisingly, had many life parallels.

Our enjoyable lunches together always ended with laughter and some dumb dad-joke.

I do so miss him.

Wes's family has lost a dedicated husband, father and grandfather. Wes and I worked together from the early 1980's until he retired around 2001. He was my clinical supervisor that entire time, and we continued to meet in monthly supervision meetings until I retired in 2019. Of course we fulfilled our professional responsibilities, but sometimes it seemed we talked more about family than work. He often reminded me that to be a parent is to worry, but he was clear that he was proud of how his children handled both their successes and failures. I hope you all will be able to remember the good times.

I worked with Wes at the Rockingham Co. Mental Health Center many years ago. I will always remember his kindness and so appreciated his guidance at our weekly staff meetings. I learned so much from him and we have remained Facebook friends for many years.

Thinking of you during your loss! My prayers are with you and your family.

Although miles and years separated us, I held on to the wonderful memories. You always gave so much of yourself to help others and I have always appreciated. More than words can express.

Wes was the kindest and most endearing man. He taught me so much as a friend and mentor, and for these I am forever grateful. He loved Rose and his children dearly and spoke of them daily as we chatted. I have and will forever miss his presence in my life. RIP, Wes.
