Keup, Allan Louis
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Allan Louis Keup, raised in Horicon, Wis., and longtime resident of Springfield, Ill., was born to eternal life on Jan. 21, 2021, in Mequon, Wis. He was 77.
Allan was born on June 13, 1943, to Helmuth and Paula (nee Koepsell) Keup in Reed City, Mich. He was baptized on July 4, 1943, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Reed City. Allan was confirmed in his Christian faith on April 14, 1957, at St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Horicon.
After attending Concordia High School in Milwaukee for three years, Allan transferred to Horicon High School for one year before graduating in 1961. He then matriculated at Concordia Teachers College in River Forest, Ill., earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1966. Allan's post-graduate work at Concordia College included master's degrees in education (1972) and church music (1983).
Allan married the former Janet Erickson on June 15, 1968, in Oconto Falls, Wis. Their marriage was blessed with three children: Jennifer, Erika, and Paul.
Raised and educated within The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, Allan pursued a calling to serve LCMS parishes. He held positions as an elementary school teacher, organist, and choir director at St. Paul Lutheran in Manawa, Wis. (1966-1972); St. John's Lutheran in Grand Haven, Mich. (1972-1980); and Trinity Lutheran in Springfield, Ill. (1980-1987). He taught hundreds of students throughout his tenure, including all three of his children. Additionally, Allan worked as an organist and handbell choir director at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Springfield, Ill., from 1987 to 2011.
Following his years as an educator, Allan was employed as a district representative for Lutheran Brotherhood from 1987 to 1997. He specialized in insurance programs benefiting Lutheran churches and schools. Allan later worked as an independent financial services representative for more than 10 years.
Allan was well known for his hobby of baking whole wheat bread on weekends, most of which he gave away to friends and parishioners. Over the years, his bread won several awards at the Illinois State Fair.
From his early years, Allan was an avid sports enthusiast. The steady southpaw pitched for his high school and college baseball teams and later for amateur teams in Theresa and Big Falls, Wis. In addition, Allan enjoyed slow-pitch softball, bowling, and ping-pong. A loyal Green Bay Packers fan and shareholder, Allan also followed the Milwaukee Braves, Milwaukee Brewers, and Wisconsin Badgers.
Allan was preceded in death by his father, Helmuth (1987); his mother, Paula (1995); his older brother, Gordon (2013); and his brother-in-law, Rolf Erickson (1992).

Was looking up an old teaching friend from St. Pauls- Manawa today. So sad to find out Al had passed away in February. I remember chatting with him at Teachers Conferences and District get-to-gethers. He was always fun to talk to and had that sort of pixie sense of humor and a twinkle in his eye. He was an excellent organist from what I am told. I lost track of him once the family left Manawa. My sincere and heartfelt condolences to you Jan and your family( now grown up). May God keep you in the loving and safe palm of his hand and give you comfort and peace.

May God's peace and comfort be with you at the loss of dear Al. My fond memories began back at Concordia Teachers' College River Forest almost 60 years ago. We shared many fun, sometimes crazy, special times with friends during our college years. The memories continued through Christmas letters, and also when we could visit with your family at your home in Springfield, and when your family came to California and visited us. We thank God for Al's life and the blessing he was to others. How wonderful and comforting to know that Al is at home with our Lord! Our love and prayers are with the family may you remember and keep the good times in your hearts.

Sad to hear the loss of another member of the Keup family. They were my neighbors across the street on Cedar Street. I have many memories involving the whole family. We played many different sports together along with watching television at their house even though my parents had a television. They also helped me in the right direction in life. One of my favorite memories of Allen was that he would come over and ask me to play catch with him. I was the youngest boy on the block and he would come over and ask me to play catch. Playing catch with Allen meant that he wanted me to be his practice pitching CATCHER! Yes, Allen would practice his pitching and I was his catcher. Many fun memories!
My thoughts and prayers are with Allen's family. I'm very sorry that I can't make the visitation due to the bad weather we are having here.

To Paul and family, I’m very sorry to hear about your father’s passing. I only met him once, several years ago when Paul brought him to a doctor’s appointment in Springfield and my wife and I happened to be there. Paul’s love and caring for his Dad was obvious. Again, please accept my condolences.

It was truly a privilege to receive my Master of Church Music in 1983 at the same time as Allan at Concordia University Chicago. His hobby of making and distributing bread pointed to the many years during which he proclaimed Jesus. the Bread of Life and salvation to his students in Lutheran Schools. Paul, may you rejoice in the faith your father proclaimed and the comfort that is yours in Christ Jesus.
In Christ, the Bread of Life,
Henry V. Gerike

Allan was a wonderful, kind, brilliant man, and talented musician. He will always have a special place in my heart. I will always remember his corny jokes, amazing homemade wheat bread and unbelievable musical ear. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you, especially Jennifer, Erika, & Paul.
