Lawrence “Larry” Hagene, 69, passed with peace and grace at his home surrounded by his loved ones at 3:06 p.m. on Tuesday, March 6, 2018.
Larry was born November 25, 1948, a son to Louis and Bernice (Kellerman) Hagene of Pinckneyville, IL. On November 27, 1969, he married Joyce (Stern) Dierkes, and two children, Brian and Kelli, were born of that marriage. On July 1, 1995, he married Marcia (Wagner), nee Gaul, and she survives.
Larry attended St. Bruno Catholic School, and in 2018, he was recognized as the Distinguished Alumni of the Year. He was a 1967 graduate of Pinckneyville Community High School. In 1968, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and earned a Purple Heart while serving his country in the Vietnam War. Larry was a coal miner and correctional officer, and he was a dedicated member of the American Legion and United Mine Workers of America.
Larry loved the outdoors, especially deer hunting, gardening, and walking. He was well known for his beautifully maintained garden and his love for cooking and baking. Though he was a man of few words, he was also a man of many kind and generous deeds. You could often find him honoring servicemen and women by being a member of the color guard in parades, a rifleman at military funerals, and a flagman for patriotic holidays. Larry enjoyed traveling to visit with fellow Vietnam veterans and their families. He was a very active member of St. Bruno Catholic Church and was committed to his faith.
Larry was preceded in death by his father, Louis and his mother, Bernice; one brother, Richard Hagene; and one sister, Glenda Hagene in infancy.
Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Marcia; five children, Brian (Holli) Hagene, Kelli McDonald, Angie Wagner (Jason Crain), Brian Wagner, and Chrissy (Dustin) Robinson; eleven grandchildren, Patrick, Hayden, Kate, Mason, Talan, Reagan, Jake, Carlie, Carter, Kelcie, and Braxton. Larry is also survived by six brothers, Louis (Veronica) Hagene, Tom (Edie) Hagene, Carl (Shirley) Hagene, Maurice (Glenda) Hagene, Tony Hagene and Vincent (Lynette) Hagene; ten sisters, Marie McDonald, Marcella Bruns, Cecilia Day (Robert Baker), Diane (Doug) Yocum, Rita (Michael) Harriss, Elaine (Terry) Heern, Annette (Don) Hart, Nora (Douglas) Neal, Denise (Ray Allen) Bathon, and Laura (Ron) Porter. He also leaves numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral Mass will be held at St. Bruno Catholic Church, Pinckneyville, IL on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. with Father Augustine Ibezimako officiating. Interment will be in St. Bruno Catholic Cemetery, Pinckneyville, IL with military graveside rites by the Presswood-Daffron American Legion Post #2504, Pinckneyville, IL.
Visitation will be held at St. Bruno Catholic Church, Pinckneyville, IL on Friday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 a.m. and on Saturday at the church from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. The rosary will be recited on Saturday at 9:00 a.m.
Memorials may be made to St. Bruno School.
Pyatt Funeral Home, Pinckneyville, IL is in charge of arrangements.

Kelli,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time. I know that this is never easy- for anyone- so stay strong and allow yourself time to gieve and talk about your father with those you love. Time can heal everything, and when you mix that with love, I strongly believe you can overcome any hardship.
