Short, Danny Robert

TOMAH - Danny Robert Short, age 68, died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2020, at his home in Tomah, following a long illness.

Services for Danny are pending.

Danny Robert Short was born the third child to Robert and Mary Lou (Strassman) Short on Dec. 5, 1951, at Madison, Wis. Dan graduated from Belleville High School in 1970, lettering in three sports. He then went on to earn master's degree in agricultural economics from UW-Platteville. On Feb. 23, 1980, Danny married Shannon Eileen McDonough in Belleville, Wis. Dan spent his entire career working for the University of Wisconsin Extension Service, primarily for Dodge County as the Livestock Specialist and farm financial analyst. He said his career had provided him many wonderful friendships and experiences in addition to being able to provide assistance to farmers and mentorship to youth via various FFA and 4-H programs.

Free time found Dan working on or tinkering with various construction projects around his home or at his cabin. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time outdoors working on food plots, hunting or trapping. He particularly enjoyed duck hunting the Horicon marsh in his duck boat or walking behind his pointing dogs. He hunted big game, upland birds, waterfowl and predators all across North America every year since 1976 with friends and family.

Dan was very generous with his time and knowledge, always willing to help people. He participated as a mentor in Big Brothers/Big Sisters for several years, volunteered at the St. Katherine Drexel Catholic church, the Juneau Rod and Gun Club, as well as other organizations.

Surviving Danny's departure are his wife, Shannon Short of Tomah; two children, Joshua (Courtney) Short of Langdon, N.D., and Krystal (Toby) Carter of Belgium, Wis.; two grandchildren, Dane and Keegan Carter; eight brothers and sisters, Diane (John) Goodman of Prairie du Sac, Ken "Butch" Short of Belleville, Ted (Debby) Short of Osseo, Julie Short of Middleton, Dr. Katie (Mark) Short-Natzke of Witwen, Ed (Janet) Short of Belleville, Kristi (Scott) Smeaton of Appleton, and John Short of Albany; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Danny was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant sister, Jody Short.

If desired, memorials may be made in Danny Short's name to your local FFA or 4-H organization.

My sincere sympathies to your family during this difficult time. I met Dan while caring for him as he learned of his diagnosis. He recognized me as one of the “shoemaker girls” immediately, and we bonded and shared many hunting, FFA, and 4-H stories there after. I will never forget his kind remarks and his pure heart, as I know he walks with Jesus now. ❤

Shannon and family, I am so sorry for your loss. I roomed with Dan at UW-Platteville. Dan also was a groomsman at our wedding. Unfortunately, I did not keep in contact with Dan and that was my loss. I wish our paths had crossed again. Thanks for the memories, Dan.

So sad to see this. My thoughts and prayers are with Shannon and her children and the entire Short family. I was lucky to go hunt pheasants with Dan in the early 70s and I shot my first pheasant with him. Dan was a few years older than me and always gave me a hard time about dating his sister, but he was always kind to me and I will remember many fun times with him.

Shannnon, Josh, Krystal and the rest of Dan's family, I was deeply saddened to hear of Dan's passing. During the 19 years Dan and I worked together I was impressed by the depth of Dan's knowledge on a wide variety of topics. I also appreciated his insights, sense of humor and concern for the wellbeing of others.

My deepest condolences to all of you. Dan was a fantastic person and his dedication to the youth in agriculture has had a lifelong impact on the agriculture industry. The many lives he touched, including mine, planted a seed to pursue a career in the future of agriculture. I will be forever grateful for the education and guidance he gave all the livestock youth in Dodge County.

Dan was one of a kind! We spent our high school years together in Belleville and our college years together in Platteville. Dan always put forth his full effort in everything he did. The Shorts pretty much epitomized "Belleville football", but my favorite BHS sports memory, of Dan, was from a track meet in Orfordville. Dan was a pole vaulter, but on that day he was also asked to run the 440 yard dash. He was in the second heat of the event and by the time the gun went off to start his race the top three places had been pretty much determined by the times in the first heat which had the faster runners. Dan, however, didn't let that deter him and as the second heat came to an end, Dan and another runner were running side by side, vying for first place in the heat. In order to beat his opponent, right before the finish line Dan launched himself horizontally, about three feet off the ground to get a part of himself across the finish line ahead of the other runner. The action was noble, but the landing wasn't. Orfordville had a crappy old cinder track and myself and a couple other guys spent about half an hour after the race picking cinders out of his arms, legs, and shoulders then spraying him down with one of those pink methyolate bombs. But that was Dan, whatever he could do to help, full speed ahead! My condolences to his family. His passing will be mourned by all who had the good fortune to come in contact with him at some point in his lifetime.

Shannon and all the Short family: My sincerest sympathy in Dan's passing. We had fun times together at our family picnic's in Paoli when we were kids. As we grew older our paths didn't often cross but Dan was so enjoyable to talk with when we did see each other. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

So sorry for your loss. He was one of the kindest men from my high school class. I saw him once at the state fair. We had a great conversation about growing up on a farm around Belleville. He is now free of his earthy illness and back doing everything he loved and looking after his family from above.
