Douglas Stephen Smith

On Monday, June 2, 2025 Douglas Stephen Smith woke up to his last sunrise. He was born November 20, 1993, two weeks ahead of schedule. This would be the first and only time Doug was early to arrive somewhere he was expected.
Doug was a graduate of Whitesboro High School and attended International Masonry Institute National Training Center in Bowie, MD. He was employed by Henderson Masonry and Restoration.
The water and the woods are where Douglas found true peace. No matter the season, he could be found fly fishing, hunting or trapping. If he wasn't doing it, he was talking about it or preparing for his next outing. Douglas supported and advocated for the Trout Power organization, promoting conservation efforts for future generations to enjoy the outdoors. His love of nature and conservation led to the re-birth of Twin Kettle Farms, where he and his friend Lucas raise chickens, ducks, guinea fowl, pheasants, quail and turkeys, along with a bunny a few barn cats and a couple of misfit goats. Selling their farm fresh eggs at a roadside stand and local markets.
Doug had an infectious laugh and could cheer anyone up if he sensed they were struggling. He reached out to the people that were on his mind- even if it was to say a quick hello, more often it was to vent about something weighing heavily on his mind. I've never met another person with so many best friends. If he knew you, he loved you and he made sure you knew it.
Douglas is survived by his mother, Mary Kris, siblings LeeAnn, Steve, Bailey and Lucas, sister-in-law Kiley and brother-in-law Greg, grandmother, Mary Currie (we all know he was her favorite), uncle, Ben and family and aunt, Joann and family. Nieces, Camryn, Gertrude and Bowie and nephews Joey, Blu, Junior, Timber, Lucas and Ben. He loved his best boy Rem and junkyard beast Poppie-forever a good girl in his eyes. Growing up in such a large family he was close to all of his aunts, uncles and cousins. Donnie and Dave- you were brothers to him. Uncle Tom and Uncle Donnie- you were his heroes.
In this 'feral tribe' we are surrounded by friends who are family. Tanner, Tim, Jordan, Joey, Mikey, Lucas, Drew, Korrie, Bonnie, Connor, Steve, Zach, Adam, Brian, Forest, Geoff, Brendan, Mike and Parker- Doug would want you to know how much you've always meant to him and that you should forgive his mom if she left anyone's name off the list (she's old-ish and really sad). Jordan Ross and Tom Schoen, your friendship and influence on Doug's life inspired him to be the man he was.
LeeAnn, Bailey, Lucas, Kiley and Greg- let his voice always be with you. Carry his love in your heart and know he's still always got your back. Gertie, your Dougie loved you more than anyone on this earth. When you sing and when you dance I know he'll be right by your side. I hope you keep his spirit alive by teaching baby Bowie ALL of the shenanigans I know he taught you. Douglas was predeceased by his father, Stephen, grandfather, Stephen Currie, grandmother, Barbara Henninger, grandfather, Raymond Smith, uncles, Pete and Dave Smith, Robert Kane, James Currie, Raymond McDermott, Melvin Beardon and cousin, Michael Dorozynski.
Doug's life was far too brief but in that time he left us all with a legacy of love and adventure. So, take chances, pick up the phone and call an old friend, go fishing, take a walk in the woods, be a little (or a lot) feral and when you fall down, get right back up and 'Brush it off! Brush it off!'
Calling hours and Celebration of Life will be Sunday, June 8th at Dimbleby Funeral Home, 40 Main Street, Whitesboro, NY. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m., with a celebration of life beginning at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be at a later date.
