Peter Winnewisser Obituary

Obituary of Peter Winnewisser

Peter Winnewisser of Cazenovia, passed away on September 26, 2025 at Crouse Community Center in Morrisville with his wife and daughter by his side. He was born in Syracuse on September 16, 1930, the son of Emil and Pia Winnewisser, who had recently emigrated from Switzerland to the United States. Growing up, Peter attended Wellwood School in Fayetteville, graduated from Cathedral Academy in Syracuse, and attended LeMoyne College.

Peter's life was marked by faith, service, and a deep commitment to community. He ministered for ten years at St. Mary's Church in Rome, NY and six years at St. Ann's Parish in Manlius. Following that, he obtained a master's degree at Syracuse University's Maxwell School where he met and married Claire (Henry) Winnewisser. He then pursued a second degree from the Urban Teacher Preparation Program and began a long and meaningful career as a Social Studies teacher at Fowler High School, where he inspired countless students across the years.

Peter's mentorship extended beyond the classroom to his love of music. For 42 years, he directed the Contemporary Ensemble at St. James Parish in Cazenovia. His leadership and talent created a welcoming space for countless people to explore music, faith, and community.

Beyond the classroom and parish, Peter's passions were many. He loved his 1930 Model A Ford and proudly founded the Mohican Model A Ford Club and launched the annual Wampsville Antique Car Show. His monthly article "Watching the Fords Go By" in Old Cars Weekly and his book "The Legendary Model A Ford" were well loved by old car buffs across the country.

An avid reader, Peter served on the Cazenovia Public Library Board and could always be found supporting the annual book sale. He also spent 18 years volunteering as a dispatcher for the Cazenovia Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps (CAVAC).

Peter was a devoted father and husband who consistently supported his daughter Amy at every stage. After they retired, Peter and Claire loved to travel and enjoyed 16 wonderful trips to Europe.

Those who knew Peter will remember his deep loyalty, his gift for listening, and his quiet but sharp sense of humor. He lived his life with a steady orientation toward community and a guiding mantra: "Go Make a Difference in This World." His impact will be felt by his family, friends, and community.

Peter is survived by his wife Claire; his daughter, Amy (Phil) Farley and grandson Jackson, of Stowe, Vermont; his brother, William of Liverpool as well as nephews Bill and John, and niece Karen.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Friday, October 3, 2025 at St. James Church. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., Thursday, October 2, 2025 at St. James Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to CAVAC, 106 Nelson St., Cazenovia, NY 13035 or to St. James Church, 6 Green St., Cazenovia, NY 13035. Pete had a great influence on my life. A book he gave me in 1958 still sits on my shelf. His enthusiasm for Russian history sparked a lifelong love of Russian literature and culture. His enthusiasm for whatever he did was overwhelming and encouraged his students to know the joy of learning. His was a true life of success as he was an inspiration for all who knew him. My life was richer for having known him.

Peter had a profound impact on the youth of Rome NY and inparticular those of us that he taught and mentored at St. Mary's school. Words can't express what he meant to so very, very many of us. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered as truly one of a kind.
