Ruby Nelson Obituary
UTICA – On Tuesday, May 13, 2025, Ruby Jean Nelson, age 71, was received into the hands of the Lord as she entered eternity, free from pain and sorrow.
Born in Waycross, GA on July 29, 1953, Ruby was the daughter of the late Joann (Nelson) Youngs. They soon relocated to the Utica area where she attended local schools. Ruby pursued higher education at MVCC, where she earned an associate's degree in Human Services. She later began studies to become a Licensed Practical Nurse, but her health ultimately prevented her from completing the program.
Ruby began her career at Abelove's Linen Supply Co. She later held a position with New York State, providing care and support to children in need. Ruby eventually relocated to California, where she lived for over 20 years and managed a housing complex. A deeply selfless person, she cared for her own mother in her final years and brought her to California to ensure she was surrounded by love and support.
Ruby's adventurous and outgoing personality made her well-known in the community. She never stopped learning-taking great pride in expanding her knowledge and embracing her reputation as a bookworm. Despite living with a lifelong illness, Ruby faced each day with courage and resilience, not allowing her illness to define her. She kept her struggles private, choosing instead to live life to the fullest and focus on what brought her joy and purpose.
Ruby had a kind and generous soul, and she deeply cherished those around her. She welcomed both friends and critics with the same open heart, never discriminating or treating anyone unfairly. Even toward those who were less than kind, Ruby chose grace-loving them from a distance while remaining true to her spirit of compassion.
In addition to her love for people, Ruby had a deep affection for her houseplants and possessed something of a green thumb. She cared for them-and her beloved fish-with gentle dedication. Her home was as full of life as she was. Ruby also enjoyed spending quiet time with her radio, simply taking in the world around her.
Some of the most cherished memories she shared with her family were fishing trips up north and annual Fourth of July camping traditions. Faith played an important role in Ruby's life; she spent much of her time studying and participating in the religion of Jehovah's Witnesses, often in the company of her beloved congregational "sisters."
Those who knew Ruby will smile remembering her sense of humor-especially when she would joke that she was allergic to anything she didn't like, from food to people!
Ruby is survived by her children, Kimberly West, Jimmy "James" Nelson, Marvin Nelson, Sr., and Christopher and Alexandria "Alex" Davis; grandchildren, Adrienne West, Richard Gibbs, Nicyonda McKenzie, Jamique Nelson, Daquan McKenzie, Tanaysia Nelson, Taneka Nelson, Jimmy Nelson, Jr., Lanique Nelson, Tytrese Nelson, Raekwon Bradley Nelson, Marquise Nelson, Nelson Richardson, Janiya Nelson, Tuacia Nelson, Marvin Nelson, Jr., Myles Nelson, De'ja Robinson, Samir Woods, Amalia Davis, Christopher Davis, and Adelina Davis; and a host of beloved great-grandchildren. Due to their closeness in age and sharing the same birth month, Ruby held a special bond with her uncle, Arthur Lane, with whom she grew up. She also leaves to cherish her memory her neighbor and dear friend, Marilyn Thrasher; lifelong family friend and "sister," Barbara Butler; Denise Love and the entire Love family; Aquanet Brown; and the late Bobby Postal. She was predeceased by her maternal grandmother, Marie Lane, whom she fondly remembered and was forever grateful for her assistance in raising her; and uncles, Robert Nelson, and Nathaniel Nelson.
The Nelson family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany for their exceptional care and treatment throughout Ruby's stay with them.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2025, from 12:00-1:00 p.m. at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. Ruby's Home Going Service and Celebration of Life will commence at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
