Charles T. 'Tom' McGinnis age 87, of rural Crawfordsville, passed away from congestive heart failure, at 5:00 PM Wednesday September 24, 2025 in Franciscan Health Lafayette East Hospital. He was born near Newtown, IN in Fountain County on March 9, 1938, son of the late Thomas 'Elmer' and Avanelle Rodgers McGinnis. He was first married to Judy Congleton in 1959 and she preceded him in death in 2011 after 52 years of marriage. He later married Dorothy High in 2018 and she survives.
Tom was raised on a farm north of Newtown until he was 15, and he had fond memories working for John and Bea Kell on their farm. Tom's family moved near Waveland and he then attended Waveland High School and helped his dad on their farm. He was always a country boy at heart, enjoying all things about farming. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1956 and finished his military obligation with the Indiana National Guard.
When Tom returned from the Army, he went to work at R. R. Donnelley & Sons and spent 40 years as a dedicated employee. After retiring from Donnelley's he took a position at the former Thrifty Supply for 19 years until it closed. He was a great fit at Thrifty, where he was known for his helpfulness, big smile and knowledge.
Though Tom never had children of his own, he was happy to help raise Judy's nieces and a big influence on other relative's children. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was always up for a prank or two. In his younger years he enjoyed riding motorcycles. Tom had dual memberships at Parkersburg Christian Church and Smartsburg Christian Church which he was currently attending, and previously attended Whitesville Christian Church.
Surviving are: his wife Dorothy and her children, Tom's step-children, who he considered his own; Randy (Kim) High of New Ross, Cindy Henderson and Julie Harpel both of Crawfordsville. Three sisters; Patsy Galloway and Nancy Myers both of Crawfordsville and Bonnie (Gary) Dickson of New Market. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Judy, niece Shannon Clark and brother-in-law Charles Galloway.
