Thomas Bylsma Obituary
Thomas "Tom" Arthur Bylsma, 84, of Lafayette, Indiana, passed away peacefully on November 1, 2025, in his hometown, surrounded by the love of family and friends. A devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Tom will be fondly remembered for his wisdom, generosity, sense of humor and unwavering kindness toward others.
Born on April 27, 1941, in Lafayette, Tom was the son of Arthur and Lucille Bylsma. After finishing his education at Jeff High School in Lafayette, Tom attended Indiana University Bloomington, where he earned an A.B. in Political Science and Asian Studies in 1965, followed by an M.A. in International Relations and Asian Studies in 1966. His fascination with world affairs and deep respect for culture led him to specialize in Mandarin Chinese-a skill that would open doors to a lifetime of meaningful work and lifelong learning.
Upon graduation, Tom served as an Asian Political Specialist on the People's Republic of China for the Foreign Services Institute of the U.S. Department of State, holding top-secret security clearances. His analytical mind, methodical approach to problem-solving, and respect for global perspectives made him a valued member of his department.
Tom's career later led him back to his beloved Lafayette, where he joined Purdue University. Over eight years, he worked in various Residence Hall leadership roles before being named Director of Married Student Housing, a position he held for 21 years until his retirement in 1997. He was known not only for his managerial skill and intellect but also for his compassion-especially toward international students adjusting to life in the United States. Tom established an English-as-a-Second-Language initiative for Chinese students, assisting them not only in learning the language but also in navigating everyday life, from grocery shopping to community engagement.
Following his retirement from Purdue, Tom directed the Luther Villa Retirement Apartment Complex, continuing his lifelong mission of helping others feel valued, comfortable, and at home.
On June 2, 1962, Tom married the love of his life, Marilyn Kluth. Their partnership, spanning 63 years, was a testament to dedication, faith, and mutual respect. Together they built a life centered around family, faith, and service. Tom is survived by his wife, Marilyn; their daughter Chris Bylsma; their two sons, John (Susan) Bylsma and Todd (Beth) Bylsma; and his beloved grandchildren (Blake, Katie, Lindsey and Robyn) and great-grandchildren (Addison, Aubrey, Brody, Bryce, Emily, Gracie, Graham, Jaxon, Lane, Steven and Waylon), with whom he shared countless joyful moments, stories and activities.
Tom was preceded in death by a Grandson Brandon, and his Mother Lucille and Father Arthur.
Tom's talents and passions were many. He was a gifted woodworker with a steady hand and generous heart, crafting detailed scroll-saw figures-his cherished "woodies"-that he gifted to family, friends, and exhibited at numerous craft shows. He loved fly-fishing, and taking fishing trips with friends, and found peace in painting both in oils and watercolor. A devoted reader, often with a history or world events book in hand, Tom delighted in discussing subjects of faith, politics, and world cultures.
Tom was a lifelong member of St. James Lutheran Church, where he served on several of the church boards in varying capacities over many years.
Visitation will be held at Hippensteel Funeral Home, 822 N. 9th St. Rd., Lafayette, IN 47904, on Thursday November 6th from 4-7pm. The Funeral Service will take place on Friday November 7th at 10am officiated by Pastor James Barton and Pastor Ed Morrow.
Tom will then be laid to rest at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Pallbearers include Don Wilkins, Adam Walton, Tyler Riley, Blake Bylsma, Todd Bylsma, John Bylsma, with Jim Leverenz serving as an honorary pallbearer.
Tom's quiet strength, thoughtful counsel, and devotion to family and faith will remain a lasting light in all who knew him.
We love you Dad!
