Frank J. Alves

CUMBERLAND - Frank J. Alves, 93, passed away on Thursday in the Miriam Hospital, Providence. He was the devoted husband of the late Amelia M. (Machado) Alves, his lifelong love. He is survived by his four children; Paul J. Alves and his wife Rhonda (Rodinsky) Alves of Jupiter, FL; Marcia A. Linback of Cumberland; Dennis Alves and Paulette Bowes of Newton, MA and Susan Alves and Stephen Eldridge of Lincoln, as well as his brother (one of his seven siblings) Antonio Alves of Hudson, FL.; eight grandchildren, eight great-grand children, and his many nieces, nephews and friends.
Born in Fall River, he was the son of the late Manuel and Maria (Borges) Alves. He resided in Cumberland for the past 71 years.
Frank and Amelia raised their beautiful family, surrounded by a large community of extended family. Their home was the gathering place of many celebrations, and the tradition continued as Frank welcomed his eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren to their loving home.
Mr. Alves was an accomplished vocalist. He was a member of the Vocal Arts Society, University Glee Club and the Coral Heranca Portuguesa and the Bristol and Barrington Senior Chorus. In addition to being an avid musician, Frank and Amelia loved to dance and met while participating in the Portuguese Folkloric Dance Troupe of the Lusitania Club in Valley Falls.
Frank was an active board member of the Cumberland Lincoln Boys & Girls Club and also a member of the Madeira Club, Central Falls. He retired after over thirty years from Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in 1985.
His funeral will be held Monday at 10:30 AM from the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road Cumberland. Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 AM in St. Patrick Church, 301 Broad Street, Cumberland. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cumberland.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 5 PM to 8 PM.
