Wilfred Fortin Obituary

LAS VEGAS, NV - Wilfred J. "Willie" Fortin, Sr., 99, passed away peacefully July 9, 2017, surrounded by his family at home in Las Vegas. Wilfred was born Jan. 15, 1918, in Newmarket, N.H., to Simon Fortin and Agnus (nee Desboises) Fortin. He was one of nine children. Wilfred was partly raised in Newmarket, and moved to Pawtucket, R.I. In 1943 he married Aline R. Soulliere and they had three children, Elaine M. Robillard, Wilfred J. Fortin and Margaret Lyle.
Wilfred joined the U.S. Army in 1941 and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and in 1944, the American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic, the Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. He was on the sinking USAT President Coolidge and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his outstanding performance in saving so many lives. He was discharged Oct. 2, 1945.
Wilfred was employed at Royal Electric for 15 years and retired at Carol Cable with 21 years of service. He was awarded the government contract and assigned to make the cable wire during the space ship era.
His beloved wife, Aline, passed away Oct. 26, 1993. His grandson Donald Lyle, also predeceased him.
Wilfred is survived by five grandchildren, Keith M. Robillard, Regina M. Wheeler, Debbie Cornetta, Diane Lyle and David Lyle. He was blessed with 11 great grandchildren.
A celebration of Wilfred's life was held on Friday, August 25, at St. Joseph, Husband of Mary, Catholic Church, 7200 W. Sahara, Las Vegas, NV 89117. A luncheon was served immediately following in the church hall. Burial will be in Pawtucket, R.I. At a later date.
