John Powell Obituary

John "Big Boy" Powell Sr. of Rockford departed this earthly life May 31, 2025. He was born December 8, 1953 in Chicago, IL the son of Ethel Mae Powell; being raised by Johnny B. Stephens. John lived in Rockford since 1984 coming from Chicago. He married the former Gloria Erving June 21, 2001, she preceded him in death. John was employed as an assembler by Chrysler Corporation many years before retiring; also employed parttime by the Rockford Park District. He was a former member of West Side Church of God in Christ. John graduated from Farragut High School in Chicago. John leaves to cherish many loving memories, his son, Cortez Powell; and daughter, Passion Jameson; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; step daughter, Qianna Davis and step sons, Demetreaus Erving and Maurice Erving; five step grandchildren and two step great grandchildren; brother, Steve Powell; aunt, Arlene Powell; a host of nieces, nephews cousins other relatives and friends including close friend Min. George Madison and two childhood friends. He was predeceased by his wife, Gloria D. Powell; parents; sisters, Veronica Brown, Michelle Powell and Jacqueline Powell; and brother Victor Powell. Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 28, 2025 at Carl E. Ponds Funeral Home Inc. 200 N. Johnston Ave. Burial in Willwood Burial Park. Visitation will be held 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
