Mildred Unger Obituary

Mildred Anne (Thrasher) Unger was born 10/27/33 to John and Ruby (Rockwell) Thrasher of Merom, IN. She died peacefully on 10/11/25. Mildred grew up in Gill Township, graduating in 1951. She married Donald Unger in Nov, 1952 and they had two daughters, Linda and Lori. In 1966, Mildred received a bachelor's degree from Indiana State University and taught junior high English/Literature until the family moved to Tucson, AZ in 1969. Mildred then began working for AZ Dept of Corrections in several capacities. She began her career as a teacher for the youth's prison while earning a Master's Degree from U of A. In 1976 she became a Correctional Program Officer II, transferring to Phoenix in 1979 as a Parole Officer. Her other positions were as Program Supervisor, Staff Training Officer, and Executive Educational Program Specialist. Her last position entailed working with the prison school`s principals, teachers, and community colleges to provide education for adult prison inmates. Don and Mildred moved back to Indiana when retiring in 1996 to be near family. They enjoyed many hobbies: traveling, golfing, and attending IU basketball games. She continually read books from the local library, enjoyed working word puzzles, and loved watching basketball. All family members knew not to call her during basketball season unless it was an emergency. She was a member of Stairway to Success and is currently a member of Merom Bluff Church and had been a long time member of Rose Chapel Church. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Don, sister, Nancy Mason and two brothers, Rev John Thrasher, Jr. and Charles Thrasher. She is survived by her daughters; Linda (and John) Kramer, Lori Quinn, (and Phil Fitch) and three grandchildren: Emily (and Shaun) Granby, Amanda Quinn, and John (and Emily) Kramer, and two step-grandchildren: Amber (and Hugh) Hunt and Ashely (and Josh) Patterson, four great grandchildren, Luke and Kent Kramer, David and Gabriel Granby and step grandchildren: Peyton Morris, Parker Patterson and Grace and Hugh Curtis Hunt. Other survivors include her sister, Faye (and Danny) Pirtle and brother, Michael (and Priscilla) Thrasher, brother-in-law Gene Mason and sister-in-law Wilma Thrasher and many special nieces and nephews. At her request, Mildred is to be cremated. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, November 1 at 2 pm in the Merom Bluff Church in Merom, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, she would like donations to be made to: Brown Baggers, Our Fathers Arms, Merom Bluff Church, or a church of your choice.
