Mary Wynn Obituary
Mary Jeanette West Wynn died Monday, October 20, 2025, at North Mississippi Medical Center at the age of 95. She was born April 26, 1930, in Clarksdale, Mississippi, to Mattie Devlin West and William Barton West.
She was raised in and near the small farming community of Roundlake in northwest Bolivar County. The majority of her school years were spent in Gunnison where she graduated high school. She spent her sophomore year of high school at Ponte Verde, Florida, while living with an aunt, uncle and cousins. She graduated from Delta State College in 1951 with a degree in Elementary Education.
Mary Jeanette began her career in Greenwood teaching first grade at North Greenwood Elementary School and "The Little Red School House." It is in Greenwood where she met and married Addison Hartwell Wynn (Breeze) in 1954 and later welcomed their sons, Addison and Barton.
Breeze's career in the Soil Conservation Service moved the family in the early 1960s to Columbus and then to Jackson where the family lived in nearby Clinton. Mary Jeanette taught first grade at both Clinton and Clinton Park Elementary Schools. During this time, she earned a Master's Degree in Elementary Education from Mississippi College. In the late 1960s the family made their final move to New Albany where Breeze and Mary Jeanette were active members in the community and where they would later retire. In New Albany, Mary Jeanette taught first grade for many years at Mattie Thompson Elementary School and would later transition to being a librarian both there and at B. F. Ford and New Albany Middle Schools. During this time, she earned a Master's Degree in Library Science from the University of Mississippi.
Mary Jeanette and Breeze were devoted care-givers for their parents and family as well as each other. She was always available and very giving to family and friends. Her happiest role was being a grandmother (Grammy) to her three grandchildren, Chase, Daniel and Kathryn.
She loved being a teacher, receiving no greater joy than teaching children to read and write. During retirement, she was a dedicated volunteer at Baptist Hospital-New Albany's gift shop as well as being a member of Junta Club, Friends of the Library and other endeavors that she cherished.
Mary Jeanette and Breeze were members of First Baptist Church in New Albany. She taught in the Five-Year-Old Sunday School Class for many years. Later, she loved being a part of Susan Feather's Sunday school class.
She was a people person who loved playing bridge, community involvement, socializing and especially talking. She seldom met a stranger, no one was better at finding a connection with a new acquaintance than she was. She is one of the last of her generation. She was molded by her humble upbringing, faith, family and the many communities of friends and students she knew along the way. She was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.
Mary Jeanette was proceeded in death by her husband of fifty-two years, parents and sister, Martha West Wilkinson and daughter-in-law, Linda Hollenberg Wynn.
