Cecil Gumm Obituary

CECIL CHARLES "CHARLIE" GUMM JR., 77, of Cross Lanes, West Virginia, went to his Heavenly home on February 17, 2026. A devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, caring brother, and loyal friend, Charlie lived a life shaped by deep faith, steady kindness, and a genuine devotion to his family and community.
A 1966 graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School (Charleston, WV), he continued his education at (then) Morris Harvey College, carrying forward a lifelong appreciation for learning. In his early career, Charlie wore several hats; painter, banker, and firefighter, each were roles that reflected his courage, dedication, and willingness to help others. He later followed in his father's footsteps, accepting a position as a chemical operator at Union Carbide. He went on to build a meaningful career as a training specialist at Bayer (Institute, WV). Upon his retirement, he worked as an instructor at the Regulatory Training Center (South Charleston, WV), where he was admired for his patience, knowledge, and commitment to helping others succeed.
A man who enjoyed working with his hands and taking pride in what he built, Charlie loved home projects, always finding satisfaction in improving and creating. He was always quick to lend a hand to his family. Whether remodeling a home, building a classroom, or repairing a car he somehow seemed to know how to fix just about anything. To those who loved him most, he was "Superman," steady, capable, and always there when he was needed. He also enjoyed attending car shows and was a lifelong member of the West Virginia Mustang Club. He took great pride in showing his award winning 2001 Mustang.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil Charles Gumm Sr. and Lillian Joplin Gumm, whose love and guidance remained with him throughout his life.
Charlie is survived by his loving wife, Jacqueline Bailey Gumm; his daughters, Amy Glaspell (Harry) and Melissa Griffith (Ed); and his son, Ryan Ware (Alyson). His sister Sharon Gumm Stalnaker. He was a proud and devoted grandfather to Brandon Glaspell, Caleb Glaspell, Jacob Griffith, Jack Ware, and Lily Ware.
Charlie's legacy is one of faith, humility, and quiet strength. His gentle spirit, warm presence, and the love he shared will continue to live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who were blessed to know him.
Friends may visit from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at Cross Lanes Bible Church. A service to celebrate Charlie's life will begin at 11 a.m. A private family entombment will be held at a later time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cross Lanes Bible Church or the Charleston Humane Society.
Online condolences can be sent to the family at www.tylermountainfuneralhome.com

I knew Charlie when he was on The Charleston Fire Dept. I'm surprised that this wasnt mentioned in his obituary.
