James Asbury Obituary

James Robert Asbury, 86, went home to be with the Lord on June 11, 2025. James was born on November 29, 1938, to Charles Benton Asbury and Thelma (Gibson) Asbury. He was preceded in death by his parents as well as his siblings Phyllis Jean (Warfield), William Joseph, Aquila "Gal" Arlene (Harrison), Donald Eugene, Danny Franklin, and Richard "Jack" Rexford, and longtime partner Linda Shamblin.

He's survived by one sister, Dorothy Jane (Harrison), and Two Brothers, Paul "Poggy" Roger and Larry Keith. James is also survived by his six children, Robert Wayne (Lisa) of Clendenin, Teresa Asbury (Donnie Adams) of Overland Park Kansas. Lisa (Tim) Taylor of Charleston, Brian Scott (Betsy) of Charleston, Kevin (Cynthia) of Sissonville, and Tracy (Kenny) Thaxton of Sissonville. James is further survived by many grandchildren and great grandchildren all of which he dearly loved.

He was born at home and started working on a dairy farm at an early age but soon headed to Detroit Michigan along with a few of his brothers to work in the automobile plants at their most productive time. After a few years, he moved back to West Virginia and spent the remainder of his life working as an ASC certified master mechanic. After more than 37 years he retired from Bert Wolfe Ford.

James was a good Christian man who never met a stranger. He truly believed in helping anyone in need, and his kindness helped impact so many lives around him. He lived by biblical principles and a sense of doing what was right toward his fellow man. He loved his family and friends and to study the Word of God. James was also an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing; he spent many hours enjoying the outdoors with his brothers, sons, and grandchildren. A special thanks to Brenda Carol Robinson, our mother, who he loved always, for helping in his care; even though they weren't together for many years, they still looked out for one another, and for that we are grateful and blessed. In lieu of flowers, we would like to ask that on behalf of our father, you help someone less fortunate. Whether it be by donating to local Christian charities or churches, or possibly helping someone you know in need or someone who just needs a kind soul to help them through a rough troubling time in their lives. We know our dad would appreciate that. We love you Dad.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30pm on June 18th at Long & Fisher Funeral Home, 6837 Sissonville Drive.
