JERRY LANDERS, 83, of Charleston, WV, born November 19, 1941, was called home to the Lord on Saturday, November 15, 2025, after a life full of love, service and family.
Jerry proudly served his country as a United States Marine, carrying the values of honor, courage, and commitment throughout his life. After his service, he worked in the coal mining industry, and then as a welder on major bridge projects across the region. His work ethic was unmatched and showed in everything he did. Widely regarded as a devoted husband, father, and a person that everyone could call Papaw.
Jerry was a true hometown hero, and spent countless hours working with youth. He poured his heart into helping young athletes develop their skills, confidence, and discipline. A gifted builder, and tireless community volunteer, Jerry constructed numerous baseball fields and batting cages throughout the Charleston area, leaving a lasting mark on local sports programs and creating safe, welcoming places for future generations to play and grow. Jerry coached softball for WVSU, Capital High, countless Little League teams and in many WV state championships, with all of his children and grandchildren playing college ball. His son, a Hall of Fame baseball player at WVU, and two grandchildren who played in the College World Series, were all produced from the batting cage he built and taught all his knowledge which was boundless.
A talented craftsman, Jerry built his home with his own hands, clearing a truly beautiful property and creating a place filled with love and memories. Anything his wife, Karen, or family wanted or needed, Jerry built it with care, strong enough to last forever, a reflection of the love he put into everything he touched.
He is preceded in death by parents Glen Landers, and Avalee "Cricket" Landers and brother Kenny Landers.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Karen Landers, who was by his side in sickness and in health, and by his children: Mark (Brandy) Landers, Jill Landers, and Kaci Landers-Jones. He leaves behind nieces and nephews who were very special to him, as well as many good friends and wonderful neighbors of 50 years Carl, Nancy, Amy, Nate, and their family.
Dad/Papaw's legacy lives on across the hill he loved so dearly, a place filled with treasured memories and countless sunsets watched from his porch. He will be so very missed.
