Joseph H. "Dr. Joe" Matusic, Jr. age 58, of Charleston passed away due to a heart attack, surrounded by his loving family, on Sunday October 1st, 2023 at CAMC Memorial Hospital.

He was born on October 12th, 1964 in Cherry Point, NC, son of Joseph H. Matusic, Sr. and Dorothy Hauck Matusic.

For 33 years, Dr. Joe served the community as a pediatrician at ABC Pediatrics, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of countless children and their families. He was a graduate of the WVU School of Medicine, resident at Charleston Area Medical Center, and fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He was a proud Aviation Medical examiner since 1997 and was certified in HIMS in 2017. Joe was featured in over 100 news health segments named 'BabySteps' covering all aspects of pediatric health and author of BabyMD.net. His compassionate and nurturing demeanor made him an incredible provider, cherished by all who knew him. His brilliance and dedication to his practice were unparalleled, a brilliant man in every sense of the word.

Joe was a man of diverse interests and talents. He found great joy in woodworking, Legos, computer coding, scuba diving, flying, skiing, traveling, and Disney. His family will remember and cherish the special memories at Disney, his happy place - a true kid at heart.

Joe is survived by his mother Dorothy, his father Joseph (Kelly Ferrell); his wife, Renee Davis Matusic; children Lauren, Kelsey, Joseph, and William; stepchildren Olivia and Christian; grandchildren Rooker, Willow, Ava, and Beau; brother, Tony (Shelia) along with their children, Rachel (Nocona), Sara, and Dan. The family also includes their faithful dog, Jake, who brought joy and companionship to Joe's life.

Joe's absence leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know him.

Family and friends are invited to visit Snodgrass Funeral Home on Saturday October 7, 2023 from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm.

A service to honor Joe's life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday with Rev. Paul Mateer officiating in remembering a remarkable man who enriched the lives of all he encountered. Entombment will follow at Tyler Mountain Memorial Garden in Cross Lanes, WV.

Dr. Joe was an awesome doctor. He was my pediatrician along with my twin sister, and when I had kids I was able to get them in with him. It was awesome to have someone my mom trusted to be my children's pediatrician. we are so sorry for you loss!

Dr. Matusic was a great man & pediatrician. He took care of all 3 of my kids. My son had a rare condition & on one of my appts there Dr Joe lifted him up over his head and said a prayer. Through prayer and the treatment provided my son turned 30 this year and is healthy. The community has definitely lost a pillar of the medical field. Fly high

Dr. Matusic was the best Doctor. He would always take time for his little patients. He made sure that his parents were informed, comfortable and educated about their children. Most of all he was fun. I can't believe I'm just now finding out about the passing of my son's amazing doctor. My son is 17 and Dr. Joe had seen him since birth. He was always so good with my son and always found a way to calm him down when he was afraid. The world lost a good one. Saddens our family of the news of are wonderful pediatrician Dr Matusic. will no longer be there. Sophia our daughter has seen Dr. Joe as she calls him, since she was 3 days old in the NICU. Sophia was born with a rare condition. Every doctor in the hospital told us we needed to see Dr. Joe Matusic. We did. She is 18 now. He was a great help to our family when we didn't understand her condition and he was there for our many challenges. He always advocated for Sophia. He will be dearly miss. This has been so hard on my family . Dr Matusic was my husband´s pediatrician all his life and then become my sons (10)and my daughters (20 months) I had hoped she would grow up with him. Dr matusic has been my granddaughters pediatrician since 2021. He always made her smile with his helmet during covid. He was so smart and great with children. We just seen him in the last month or so ago for her flu shot. May his family find peace during their time of mourning.

I have been seeing Dr Matusic for over 10 years for my flight physicals. Dr Matusic and his staff are the best. Just saw them in August. I´m still in shock.

I always appreciated our conversations about aviation and family. He was always busy but would take time to chat and address any concerns. I had a concern once for my daughter and Dr Matusic told me to bring her in that day. This is how he took care of people. I always appreciated that. We now have a huge void in the aviation community. I knew from the moment he entered my hospital room to speak to my husband and I about our newborn that he was destined to be a great pediatrician. I cannot express how heartbroken I am in the loss of Dr. Matusic. He was the most incredible man to my children and our family. Dr. Matusic has seen my daughter since birth. She is now 9. My heart is heavy thinking about such a huge loss this is to so many. We loved him. I always loved him calling out facts and percentages that went way over my head. I would think "dumb it down" so I can understand. He always answered all my questions and then would always take the time to ask me how I was doing. There will truly never be a pediatrician that can take his place.

Dr.Matusic was a hero to me! My children mean the world to me and I always knew he could "fix" whatever ailed them. For the past seventeen years we had the best pediatrician ever. His sense of humor and patience always made us feel at ease. All three of my boys were shocked and saddened to hear this. My oldest son saying "I'll never get to tell him what I want to be when I grow up." A question that Dr.Matusic asked each of my boys at every well child visit. He will be truly missed. I'm so very sorry for your loss and will keep the prayers coming.
