LOWELL CRAFTON WITTERS was born September 10, 1932, in Charleston, West Virginia, to the late, Daniel and Margaret Harris Witters.
After his father left the family, Lowell worked several jobs to help provide for his mother and two sisters, Phyllis and Vianna. Lowell was drafted into the U.S. Army and served for two years in Korea. He then completed a degree in business administration at Morris Harvey University (now the University of Charleston). During his college career, he met his wife, Myrna, with whom he spent the last nearly sixty-eight years.
Lowell was employed by the West Virginia state government for thirty-seven years and retired from the Department of Employment Security as Director of Data Systems and Analysis. He was recognized as a Distinguished West Virginian by Governor Gaston Caperton for his service as an employee of the state of West Virginia.
Lowell served as the director of the West Virginia Senior Sports Classic for 10+ years and participated in softball, volleyball, and his beloved pickleball. Lowell introduced pickleball to West Virginia senior sports after watching the game while he competed in volleyball at the Huntsman World Senior Games in St. George, Utah. He was also a HospiceCare volunteer.
Lowell loved his children and his grandchildren. He was always ready with his tool bag in his trunk to help with any project. He attended every one of their sporting and academic events he was able to attend.
Lowell died peacefully in his home, as he wished, early October 30, 2024. Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Myrna; children, Kelly (Lon), Kent (Connie), and Keith (Sherry); his grandchildren Kole (Brittany), Klay, Kris, Kurtis (Allison), Kristian (Lindsey), Kaylee (John), Karsen (Katelyn), Kiersten (Brendan), and Karis; and his great grandchildren Kinsey, Karly, Konner, Korinne, Lewis, and Sidney. Lowell considered it a privilege to serve others in any way he was able. His kind acts of service and love for his many friends and family will be dearly missed.
