David Johns Obituary

David Murray Johns, 72, more proud to be known as "Daddy" or his favorite name "Pawpaw" passed away peacefully at home early in the morning of September 17, 2025. David was born February 7th, 1953, in Fayetteville, WV, to his loving parents, Lysle and Mary Johns. He was born and raised and spent most his life out on Gatewood on the family farm, the place he loved and called home. David lived his life helping others and would give you the shirt off his back. He didn't care what he had going on, he would drop everything to help. He would do the things in a way you would remember for life, the "David Johns Way", and show you that anything could be fixed with a little black tape. He always kept a cooler of Gatorade in the back of his truck for kids or anyone thirsty. He went to help a friend cut a tree down and haul it off. That man dropped the tree and drug the whole tree, limbs and all, straight up the main road to his house. A cop happened to be coming by that time, he had the cop turn his lights on and back up all the way up the main road to his house. He was a good friend, one you could count on, but he was the best dad, and even more amazing Pawpaw. David's kids and grandkids were his life. He would take a bullet for them. He always found a way to make sure his kids had what they needed and most of the time what they wanted. They knew he was their biggest fan and supporter. He would drive 6 hours each trip a couple times a week to watch our game and have dinner with his kids. He also took all his kids hunting when they were younger. Even after one of them yelled, "Daddy you going to shoot it?", scaring off a deer of a lifetime. David's grandkids came along, and he was wrapped from day one. They all knew if they wanted something, just ask Pawpaw. He made sure they got it, and usually a little more. One of them wanted a goat, ONE GOAT, they came home to 13 fullgrown goats running around the yard eating everything in sight, house and cars included. When he wasn't helping someone, or spoiling his kids and grandkids, you could find him in his red Dodge at a gas station flirting with the women, chasing his "brown sugar." He also enjoyed going hunting and fishing. In the spring and summer, with his pants rolled up, barefoot, and sweatband on his head, he'd be in his garden working. He loved guns and trading anything. David enjoyed watching westerns and sitting on the front porch reading a good western. He enjoyed evenmore sitting on his son's front porch having a cup of coffee, reading his book, or talking to October. David was preceded in death by his loving parents, Lysle and Mary Johns; brother, Lysle Johns; Uncles and Aunts, Lemon Guy Johns, Zelma Lee and several other aunts and uncles; and Granny, Eva Smith Those left to cherish his memory include his children, John Wesley (Leann), Nathan (Autumn, October) Johns, Alyssa Johns (Mark Gold), Kelsey (Ricky) Scarbro, Jodie (Shawn) Gold; Grandchildren, Kashton, Rhett (Beanie Weenie), Zeke (Levi), Maddie, Colton, Paisley, Zoey (Joey), Kiely, Carter, Jordynn, and Jared; cousin, Bobby Johns; brothers, John Johns and Jim (Anna) Johns; good friends, Gary (Luetta) Frasier, Dr Anwar, Roger Goins, Debbie Dunkley, Joanne Lambert, and Raymond Thompson; 5 Great-Grandchildren and many nephews, and nieces. David will be cremated. No services are scheduled at this time. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled for a later date.
