Freda Childers

PRINCETON – Freda Mae Childers, 76, of Princeton, died Sunday, August 31, 2025. Born November 5, 1948, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Robert Charles Pilkington and Pearl Shrewsbury Pilkington. Freda was a 1966 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley. She spent many years as a homemaker, wife and mother. As her children got older, she worked for Nash Finch in Bluefield, Virginia. She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church in Princeton since 1978. She was a children's choir director, adult choir member and head of the hospitality committee. Freda also volunteered at Princeton Health Care Center and the Chuck Mathena Center. She loved to serve others, often helping shut-ins with their daily needs. Freda was a member of the Princeton Junior Woman's Club and enjoyed painting ceramics and making personalized greeting cards. Freda especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Roger Childers; one sister, Almeda Mallamus; and one brother, Clyde Karnes. Survivors include one son, Robert Childers and wife Teresa of Bluefield; one daughter, Marsha Comer and husband Shawn of Princeton; one sister, Mary Lee Watson and husband Mike of St. Albans; and seven grandchildren, Robert Childers of Marietta, OH, Channing Childers and wife Lexie of Pineville, Justin Sabo and wife Brittini of Princeton, Bryanna Ellison and husband Travis of Kegley, Russell Ball and fiancée Jess of Bluefield, Madison Pettrey and husband Gavin of Princeton and Clayton Comer and wife Shannon of Princeton; and eight great grandchildren, Ezrah, Brooklyn, Ryker, Oaklynn, Elena, Kolsen, Grant and Aaron. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 6, 2025 at the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Pastor Andrew Maynor officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday, September 6, 2025 from 1:00 p.m. until service hour at the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton.
