Lonnie Dare Matney

Lonnie Dare Matney, age 75, of North Tazewell, Virginia, passed away at his home on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, following an extended illness. He was born in Bishop, Virginia, on July 23, 1950, and was the son of the late Ezra Matney and Polly Dunford Matney. Lonnie was well known for his lively personality and strong work ethic. His number one goal in life was taking care of his family. He had worked for 33 ½ years as a truck driver for Adam's Construction and considered them to be his work family. He was a giver and always made sure to give to his family and friends. He worked out of town for weeks, and when he was home, he wanted to spend time with those he loved. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Ella Gay Fields and Diane Shephard. Those who survive him are: His daughter, Sue Ellen Sayers, and her husband, Raymond of Bandy, VA Sisters, Juanita Asbury of N. Tazewell, VA Sylvia Farmer of Bishop, VA Brothers, Eugne Matney of N. Tazewell, VA Lawrence Matney and his wife, Thelma of N. Tazewell, VA Grandchildren, Pamela Fields and her husband, Adam, of Lewisburg, VA Stephanie Fields of N. Tazewell, VA Great-grandchildren, Robert and Jordan Fugate Multiple children of the heart, several nieces and nephews, and a host of family and friends also survive. To celebrate his life, a visitation will be held in his honor at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Tazewell, Virginia, on Friday evening, October 3, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
