Susan was born to parents Roy and Kitty Mason of Yadkinville. She passed away after a lengthy, courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She is survived by her husband, William H. Bouterse (Bill) of Oakville; sisters, Phyllis Mason Macemore of Yadkinville, Jerrie Howell (Keith) of Sparta; nieces, Melissa Howell of Christiansburg, VA., and Paula Macemore Stokes (Bradley) of Wilkesboro; nephew, Andrew Howell (Lori) of Denver. Susan graduated from Forbush High School and from the University of NC at Greensboro with a BS in Nursing. She worked in many health care capacities including mental health and community health care including serving as director of the Sunshine Community Health Center in Talkeetna, Alaska during their building campaign. She retired as a Health Program Manager for the state of Alaska. Susan and Bill fulfilled their dreams of taking an RV trip across America. They also made multiple trips to their wilderness property in Suslositna, Alaska. Susan was a devoted gardener and lover of nature. She inherited her green thumb from both parents and her love of music from her Mom. She had an open loving spirit, including a joyous laugh that we will greatly miss. Susan was of the Quaker faith and lived her faith. The family would like to thank Dr. Liz Swisher and staff from the Fred Hutch Cancer Center in Seattle and Dr. Linda Smith palliative care doctor and friend from the Alaska Women's Cancer Center in Anchorage for their support and loving care. The family would also like to thank friends Kim and Andrew who supported Susan and Bill through the most difficult times of the illness. A private service was held on Monday, May 6, at Mills & Mills Funeral Home in Tumwater, WA. Memorials in her memory would be appreciated to organizations that fight cancer or those that support the health of the earth's environment.

Susan was a good friend and cousin. She acted in several roles for the Yadkin Players, a community theatre group in Yadkinville. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.
