Robert Smitherman Obituary

EAST BEND — Robert Mayo Smitherman, 88, of East Bend, passed away Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, in Winston-Salem.

He was born May 1, 1925, to the late David Ambrose and Mollie Hobson Smitherman. Robert served in the U.S. Army during WWII before returning home to take care of his sisters following the death of his father in 1944. He was preceded also in death by his son, James Robert Smitherman; and a brother, James Ambrose Smitherman.

Robert worked as a surveyor for the federal government and led a full life. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol and received a letter of thanks from the US Department of Agriculture for his assistance following Hurricane Camille. Never one to sit still he remained active and the week before his death he planned to ride to the mountains to pick apples.
