Eva M. Arcuri

Eva Maria Arcuri, who celebrated her 100th birthday on July 4, 2021, died Saturday, July 31 in Brigantine, New Jersey. A longtime resident of York, Pennsylvania, she moved to Brigantine to live with her daughter and son in law.
Mrs. Arcuri was born in Padova, Veneto region, Italy, one of seven children of Cirillo and Emma (Benetazzo) De Gasperi. She attended school in Italy to the fifth grade and later became an accomplished seamstress and dressmaker, designing the gowns for her daughter's wedding. She worked in several clothing factories in the York area, including David Suit and York Suit, until her retirement.
She married Vito Arcuri in November 1941 in Padova, Italy. Vito and Eva met while he was stationed in Padova while serving in the Italian Army during the war. As they were traveling from Padova to Sicily for a honeymoon, they had to seek shelter as they were bombarded by Allied forces.
In December 1954, Eva, Vito and her two children immigrated to the United States aboard the Andrea Doria, the famed Italian ocean liner which sank in the North Atlantic in 1956. She obtained her American citizenship, an event of which she was extremely proud. An additional source of pride was her cooking ability and she made dresses for family, friends and clients. She was a member of the Jolly Seniors and her local International Ladies Garment Workers Union.
Mrs. Arcuri was widowed on May 4, 1994.
She is survived by one daughter, Josephine Helfrich (Jacob), of Brigantine, and Frank (Patricia) of York. Additionally, she is survived by four grandchildren, Jacob (Terri) Helfrich of Howard Beach, New York, Joann (Matthew) Gross of Malverne, New York, Claudia Arcuri Crowder of Burke, Virginia and Frank Arcuri (Cynthia) of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She is also survived by seven Great Grand children and 8 Great Great grand children.
Services are being handled by John W. Keffer Funeral Home of York, Pennsylvania and a Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, 2935 Kingston Rd. York at 11:00 a.m. A brief period of visitation will be held at the Church prior to the Mass. Entombment will be at Holy Savior Cemetery immediately following the Mass.
