Gordon Goodwin Obituary

NORTH YORK Gordon L. Goodwin was ushered into Heaven on May 20, 2012, at 3:30 p.m. The son of the late Melvin and Pauline Toomey Goodwin, Gordy was born August 19, 1932 in York. He was the beloved husband of the late Joan M. Goodwin who went home to be with the Lord on June 15, 2011. Together they created a loving family including their children, Dennis Goodwin and his wife Jeannie, Douglas Goodwin (deceased), Kathy Peterson and her husband David, Janie Hoffman and her husband Jim, Gail Slattengren and her husband Darryl, and John Goodwin and his wife Stephanie. He was blessed with ten grandchildren, Chase, Taylor, Julie, Kristi, Erin, Steve, Carly, Max, James and Samantha, and six great grandchildren: Harlan, Myles, Hollis, Elden, Carter and Luna. Gordy will also be missed by his sister Coletta Weichert and family. Gordy was preceded in death by his two brothers, Marlet and Burnell Goodwin. Gordy, who was known as "Goody" in his younger days graduated from William Penn High School in 1950. He had a God given gift for working in the construction field and could build anything he laid his hands on. He built his first home in North York at the age of 19 and ended up back in North York when he built his fourth home in 1995. He was always ready and willing to do any remodeling or new construction jobs for his children as well. When he graduated from high school he was self employed as a contractor and worked for Harold H. Hogg and retired from Richard D. Poole in 1997. Gordy also used his gift working with Habitat for Humanity in the York County area and volunteering for Servants on mission trips to Mississippi and Tennessee helping with hurricane and tornado clean up. Gordy had a servant's heart and was always willing to lend a hand to many of his friends over the years. Gordy was a member of Messiah United Methodist Church and the Trinity Sunday School Class. He was also a former member of the Manchester and North York Lions Club for many years. He was a sports fan that enjoyed watching baseball, football and golf, and was an avid NY Yankees fan his entire life. Gordy was a member of the Hackers Golf League who played every Monday. He had a love for photography, enjoyed riding bikes on the rail trail, and liked walking on the beach. He and his wife loved to travel and took several cross country trips to visit family. Gordy was a man of strong faith who not only talked the talk, but he walked the walk. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who loved and cared deeply for his family. In celebration of Gordy's life, please join us on Friday, June 8th, at Grace United Methodist Church, 473 Plank Road, New Freedom. The family will be available to greet friends from 10 a.m. to noon with the Celebration of Life Service beginning at noon. Pastor Al Horst and Pastor Jeff Slemp will officiate. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity, 33 S. Seward St., York, PA 17404; or Servants, 268 W. Beaver St., #103, Hellam, PA 17406.

Kathy and family: I was so shocked when I received the news about your dad. We were part of the Grief Share group who met at First Assembly on Thursdays as we encouraged one another on the painful road of learning how to go on without our spouses. I know Gordy is where he has longed to be since June 15, 2011 - with the Lord and your mom. How happy he is but how very difficult and painful it is for all of you. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers.
