Ianthe Baker Obituary

Ianthe G. (Smith) Baker, 91, formerly of Abbottstown, and lately a resident of The Brethren Home Community, New Oxford, died Saturday, February 22, 2003, at the home. She was the wife of Fred V. Baker, who died December 18, 1990. Mrs. Baker was a teacher, having taught at the former East Berlin High School, Woodbridge School District, N.J., and retired from Spring Grove School District, where she taught at Paradise Elementary School. After retirement, she was employed at The Bon-Ton, Hanover. She was a member St. John's Lutheran Church, Abbottstown; taught Sunday School at various churches in New Jersey and Pennsylvania; graduated Gettysburg College; and was a member of Conewago Chapter No. 532, Order of the Eastern Star. Born in Dillsburg July 12, 1911, she was a daughter of the late Cleason E. and Gertrude E. (Berkheimer) Smith. She leaves two sons, William E. Baker of Forest Hill, Md., and Peter M. Baker of Harrisburg; four grandchildren, Matthew, Joshua, Adam, and Amanda Baker; and a brother, Billy B. Smith of Abbottstown. She was predeceased by two brothers, Edgar C. and Peter H. Smith. Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 1, 2003, from St. John's Lutheran Church, 100 E. Water St., Abbottstown, with her pastor, Rev. Mark A. Werner, officiating. Burial will be private. There will be viewing; however, the family will greet friends at a reception at the church following the memorial service. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church Memorial Fund in Ianthe's memory, 100 E. Water St., Abbottstown 17301. Feiser Funeral Home Inc., 302 Lincoln Way West, New Oxford, is handling the arrangements.
