I am very sorry to learn about the death of Ken Matthews (Mr. Matthews to me). I was in the North Hills Jr HS Fife and Drum Corps in 1976 and remember marching in many (seemed like a lot at the time) parades that bicentennial year. We were certainly in demand. I was also a flute player in his concert band. He had the well-earned respect of the band members. As a kid at the time, of course I didn't realize how much extra time and work it must have been for him to organize all of our band activities, especially the Fife and Drum Corps. Many years later, I now understand his dedication. I am very sorry for your loss.

As Past President of the York Symphony Chorus, Ken was a wonderful role model and provided practical support to new board members. He always met me with a smile and an encouraging word. I am very grateful to have known Ken and am thankful for his hard work and dedication to the York Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. I am comforted to think of the Heavenly music he is making now. I was saddened to learn of Ken's passing. I got to work wth Ken, as an adult volunteer, for the 2 years my son, Adam, was a member of the CYMS Colonial Fife and Drum Corps. We talked and laughed a lot riding in the back of the bus to parades. Ken gave Adam his "start" in music, beginning with Low Brass Sectionals in school, and private lessons in 7th grade. My wife and I spent many evenings in the Matthews Basement while the lesssons took place. Ken laid the groundwork for Adam's career as a Music Educator.

I've never met a more optimistic, fun, intelligent and spirited soul than Ken Matthews.
I grew up knowing Kay & Ken and playing with Lauren & Andrew a lot. Having a guy like that in your life is a nice buoy to have and I always knew I could take his words at face value.
I'm still pretty torn up about this but I want to offer my love and condolences to Kay, Lauren & Andrew. My heart goes out to you.

Mr. Matthews was a wonderful man and a great band director! My fondest memories of him are from the Fife and Drum Corp in the late 70s! My deepest sympathy and love to all who were lucky enough to know him, and especially with Kay and the family. God Bless you and keep you❤
