Millicent L. (Amey) Hopps passed away at York Hospital on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at the age of 89. She was a loving wife and caregiver to Robert C. Hopps, who also had Alzheimer's disease and predeceased her in 1986.
She was born in Baltimore, Md. on May 23, 1926 and was the daughter of the late Milton and Gertrude (Morton) Amey.
In spite of being legally blind all her life, she was a hair stylist for 40 years. Later in life she switched careers by training and working as a cafeteria manager for the Blind Industries and Services of Maryland.
Millicent believed that laughter was the best medicine. She was a volunteer clown, known by the name Flutterby. When first going to clown college she was known as Silly Milly. She attended clown classes at Towson State University in Md. and Millersville University in Pa. Flutterby and her friend, Tizzy the Clown, were regular visitors at The Arc, John Hopkins Hospital and Franklin Square Hospital to name a few. Millicent was a member of the Edgemere Moose Clown Club. She enjoyed marching in 4th of July parades and hosting her grandchildren's birthday parties with her magic shows. She loved to put a smile on everyone's face, which happened whether she walked in a room as Flutterby or as herself. She also enjoyed going to Delta Senior Center until her Alzheimer's disease prevented her attendance.
She was a long-time member of Overlea United Methodist Church in Overlea, Md. before moving to Pa. and was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in York in recent years.
Survivors include one daughter, Millicent Holcomb; one granddaughter, Jennifer Potts; one grandson, Jason Holcomb; three great-grandchildren; three sisters; one brother; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
There will be a viewing on Thursday, May 26 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Miller – Dippel Funeral Home, Inc., 6415 Belair Rd., Baltimore, MD 21206. Service of Honor and Praise for Millicent will begin on Friday, May 27 at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Burg Funeral Home, Inc., 134 W. Broadway, Red Lion, is assisting with local arrangements. Burial will follow in Lake View Memorial Park, 2724 Liberty Rd., Sykesville, MD 21784.
