Nancy E. Brougher

York - Nancy E. Brougher, daughter of Donald and Marguerite Elicker, passed away on Monday, April 19, 2021 at the age of 70. She was born December 16, 1950 in her hometown of York, PA. She was the wife of Peter C. Brougher, with whom she would have celebrated 50 years of marriage on May 22, 2021.

Nancy is also survived by her brother, Tom Elicker, who resides in Philadelphia. She also leaves two awesome children: Heath Brougher and Megan Brougher, both residing in York, PA, and four amazing nephews and nieces: Thomas Jr. and Matthew Elicker of Phoenixville, PA, and Kate Harrison of Maryland and Richard Noll from the windy city in Illinois. Also two cousins who she adored: Kathy Heiser and Jody Bowers of York. And last but not least a plethora of animals she helped save, along with hundreds of fantastic friends with memories to last ten lifetimes!

Nancy attended York Suburban High School where she graduated in 1968. Nancy was a nurse for 46 years, spending time working at York Hospital and specializing in pediatrics. She also spent time working as a private duty nurse for children with rare diseases during her latter years. Due to the extreme love she had for her final patient, Zachary Meyers, who suffered from Epidermis Bullosa and passed away at the age of 10, her desire to continue his legacy of love helped her create "ZACHS," a rescue home for elderly abused dogs in order to bring some joy into the final years of their lives. She had such a love of life, especially when it came to her four legged friends.

After Nancy retired, she dedicated her time to her true passion in life, helping animals in numerous endeavors. She became involved with a number of rescue organizations which were based throughout Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New Jersey. Soon thereafter, Nancy, along with her husband, threw her efforts full force into the personally funded charity Paws Soup Kitchen. This enterprise was her idea and true love! This marvelous passion of hers helped provide food for over a thousand dogs and cats owned by low-income families. The Paws Truck, aided by various volunteers, distributed dog and cat food at pre-designated times and at certain food pantries. This operation continued for approximately five years and gave her immense joy in helping so many needy and wonderful people. Her father-in-law had been the prime benefactor of the Brougher Companion Animal Shelter which serves as the new local SPCA. Nancy's decision to open a private dog sanctuary was her real labor of love! A new property and house were purchased and made into a facility where a number of dogs could live out their remaining years with the love and compassion many of them never experienced. Along with her dear friend Renee Rocco and her husband, Pete, the project became a reality. She named the sanctuary "ZACH'S" in honor of the above mentioned Zachary Meyers, who inspired her in so many ways with his bravery and fortitude to fight so hard in a battle where winning was impossible. We could go on and on with various stories about Nancy and her life which could fill up pages. But would rather keep things centered on her love of animals which was shared by everyone with the Brougher gene!

Nancy had a lot of other interests in her life including sports, travel, and music, which she shared with her husband along with hundreds of great friends. She was a truly beautiful woman, both inside and out. She will be missed by so many, both locally and internationally. She adored her children, Heath and Megan, who both shared her magnanimous love to help animals in need.

A private service for family members will be held at the John W. Keffer Funeral Home at 3:00pm on Tuesday April 27, followed by a Celebration of Life gathering for all friends starting at 5:00pm at The Lake Club, 2028 Lake Club Lane, Spring Grove, PA. Food, beverages, and good memories will be the center point of this event.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made to the Brougher Companion Animal Shelter or any animal rescue agencies that they may prefer. Or simply donate your time and energy to any person or cause where your help will be appreciated.

Nancy will be sorely missed by any that knew her. Her vivacious personality and stunning beauty were felt by all that knew her. Nancy worked tirelessly, regardless of some recent medical conditions. She refused to give in to pain and suffering, and this demanding schedule probably accelerated her untimely demise. But she always did it her way, the only way she knew how. We will honor her positive attitude and hope to see every person see life this way as we all work hard to help bring this world back to "normalcy."
