Robert Toomey Obituary

YORK Robert N. Toomey, 88, of York Township, died Saturday morning, April 2, 2011, at his residence, surrounded by his loved ones in his final days. He was the husband of Sarah L. (Pulley) Toomey. Born January 30, 1923 in York, a son of the late Elmer N. and Pauline V. (Emig) Toomey, he proudly served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in Fort Belvoir, Va. from September 5, 1940 until 1945, during which he met his future wife. Mr. Toomey began his business career as the owner of Bob Toomey Esso on Richland Avenue. During that time he formed Bob Toomey Truck Leasing, providing truck transportation for Bon Ton Foods. He then founded Robert N. Toomey Trucking, Inc., which provided nationwide cargo transportation, and operated a truck brokerage firm in Dallas, Texas. He was a member York Elks Lodge #213, and was a member, and past president, of the York Chapter of Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association. In addition to his wife of 68 years, Mr. Toomey is survived by two sons, Greg R. Toomey of York, and Eric M. Toomey, and his wife Deborah, of York; a daughter, Ellen K. Campbell, and her husband Dan, of Charlotte, N.C.; three grandchildren, Lisa Toomey Breckenridge, of Wyckoff, N.J., Robert N. Toomey, III, of Hanover, and Hunter Virginia Campbell, of Charlotte, N.C.; and three great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a son, Robert N. Toomey, Jr. Funeral services will be private. Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, Inc., 863 S. George St., York (the former Hahn Home), is in charge of arrangements. The Toomey family is grateful for all the care and attention he received at the Veteran's Medical Center in Lebanon. They are eternally grateful for the loving care of the nurses and aides from AseraCare Hospice and their dear family friend, Quenell Sease. Grandpa - I was blessed with 40+ years of wonderful memories. One of my favorite is the day you tried to teach us how to canoe as a solo. The canoe flipped right over and you landed right in the pond. You got up, laughed at yourself (sopping wet) and went right back at it to show us the "right" way to do it.
