Russell Spangler Obituary

PLEASUREVILLE Russell E. Spangler, 89, died Thursday, May 28, 2009, at York Hospital. He was the husband of the late Viola May (Barshinger) Spangler. Born March 9, 1920, in Jacobus, he was a son of the late Harrison M. and Louisa E. (Hengst) Spangler. Russell retired from Graham Engineering Company in 1982. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, having served on the U.S.S. Markab AD-21. Mr. Spangler was a very active member of Pleasureville United Methodist Church where he was recently recognized has having the longest tenure as a church member. He was also a member of the York Naval Ordnance Plant Alumni. Survivors include two daughters, Dolores Haag and Doris Hamme, both of York; two sons, Barry R. Spangler of Prescott, Ariz., and Robert E. Spangler of Hereford, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Zimmerman of York; and a brother, Richard Spangler of York. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at Pleasureville United Methodist Church, 2606 N. Sherman St., York, with his pastor, the Rev. Steven M. Livermore, officiating. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery with full military honors provided by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. A viewing will be from 9 to 10 a.m. at the church on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Pleasureville United Methodist Church, 2606 N. Sherman St., York, PA 17406. The Etzweiler Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1111 E.
