Uncle Larry, I rode past your house a few months ago and you were standing by your garage. I was visiting gravesites of the family getting ready to do a family search. I blew the horn, I should have stopped. I didn't know the last time I'd talk to you was at Mike's service or the last time I'd see you would be that Saturday.
You were a great son to Mamaw, and what some might not know is your kindness and love of family. I remember when you came to our house on Memory Lane one year when I was about maybe 8 years old. I didn't understand then why you did this until many years later. You brought us a Christmas tree, that alone was so thoughtful and kind by itself. I remember riding with you to the Joe the Motorist Friend where you picked up lights and that silver tinsel that is used to decorate a tree. Even as my memories are starting to escape me of many things I can still see you decorating that tree. As I said, I knew many years later why you did this, and it wasn't for praise or a pat on the back cause as a little guy it wasn't something you told your grade school friends about. As I now have thought about this since receiving the news you pass it warms my heart and brings tears to my eyes.
Once, at Muddy Run where we had family picnics you took several of us young kids out in a rowboat. You rowed us around and when it was over you had blisters on your hands from it. We probably didn't even say thank you because we were just kids having fun with our Uncle. Now, years too late I want to say thank you for your kindness and love you showed us. You were a quiet man who kept to himself, down inside you were kind and loving. I watched over the years as you took care of your Mom. She wanted to stay in the home place and even with your new home waiting you gave her what she wanted. I wish I had been there for my Mom as you were.
You sold me your 1970 Chevelle, I wish now I still had that car, I don't remember why you sold it to me or gave me a call about it. You walked me around it that day and showed everything to me, you talked and talked that day. I have great memories of you and all of the family that is now back together in Heaven. I remember the Sundays that the family would all show up and Mamaw's house and stay until it got dark. Grandkids getting yelled at for climbing in Mamaw's Chestnut and Cherry trees. Using the outhouse and putting almost an entire bag of lime on our business after. I remember the soda bottles on the back window sills of that small room that led outdoors, all of the pies, sugar and molasses cookies on that small table. Life was so great for us all on those Sunday afternoons.
It's a sad time this Thanksgiving, but I can imagine that you have a lot of catching up to do with the family who went before you. Thank you for your kindness and love and being a good Uncle to us all.
