March 31, 1945 - August 18, 2025
Diann Jean (Nienhueser) Critel, age 80 of York, Neb., died Monday, August 18, 2025 in Sutton, Neb. She was born on March 31, 1945, to Ernst and Elinore (Peters) Nienhueser in York. On July 21, 1963, she was united in marriage to Larry G. Critel in York. Diann was baptized at St. Paul Lutheran Church and confirmed at Emmanuel Lutheran Church. She was a long-time member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Waco, Neb.
Diann was a farm wife and homemaker. She enjoyed baking and canning, and loved sharing it with others. She was a kitchen assistant at Emmanuel Faith Lutheran School in York, and at York Public Schools.
She is survived by her children Andy (Brenda) Critel of Trumbull, Neb., Gail Critel of Inglewood, Calif., Christopher (Cindy) Critel of York; son-in-law Terry Naber of Geneva, Neb., Steve (Malisa) VanDe Walle, Jeanie Wolkins (Jerry), Mark (Camille) VanDe Walle, Lisa (Kendal) Schuster; 23 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Larry; daughter Tammi; sister Lois; and her significant other Paul VanDe Walle.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Thursday, August 21, 2025, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waco with the Reverend Matthew Mau officiating. Interment will follow in Waco's St. John's Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, with the family greeting friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. that evening, all at Metz Mortuary in York. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation. Condolences may be left for the family at metzmortuary.com. Metz Mortuary in York is handling the arrangements.
