John David Thompson

John David Thompson, age 98 of York, Neb., died on Sunday, September 28, 2025 in York. He was born on June 30, 1927 to Ozro and Florence (Flanagon) in York County. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph Catholic Church, where he was a life-long member and joined the Knights of Columbus. He graduated from 8th grade on May 16, 1942 from District 27. John was united in marriage to Viola Schmidt on February 16, 1953. To this marriage was born son, David, and daughters, Cindy and Cheryl.
John helped his father farm until they moved to York. He could tell you what was wrong with everything. He was self-taught until he went to work for H. Ells Oil Company for 38 years, and retired from the City of York on August 1, 1995. While working for the City of York, he welded the stand for the plane displayed at the entrance to the York airport.
He is survived by son, David (Deb) Thompson of York; daughter, Cindy (Ron) Bellows, of York; four grandsons, Thatcher (Jenny) Thompson, Jameson Bellows (fiancé Sasha Adams), John (Beth) Bellows, Zachery (Madison) Ocken; one granddaughter, Logan (Jared) Ritze; four great-grandsons; three great-granddaughters; brother Joe (Lenore) Thompson of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and sister-in-law Maxine (Jerry) Hurlbut of York; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Cheryl Ocken; sisters, Marie deLourdes, Margaret (Dean) Patterson; brothers, Tom Thompson and Richard Thompson.
A Mass of Christian burial is scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 3, 2025, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in York, with the Reverend Father John Sullivan officiating. A rosary will be said one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow the service at York's St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 1 to 8 p.m., with the family greeting friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m., that evening, all at the Metz Mortuary in York.
