ROCKINGHAM — Randy Thomas Jarrell, 74, of 119 Skyline Drive, Rockingham, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017. Randy was born Dec. 20, 1942 in Rockingham, North Carolina, son of the late Ray Hampton and Ferol Davis Jarrell.
Randy retired 10 years ago, as production manager with the Richmond County Daily Journal. He worked there for more than 47 years. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Caroline Ann Quick Jarrell; his brother, William Alexander(Dub) Jarrell; and his sister, Sandra Jarrell McIntyre.
Randy, affectionately known to us as "Poppa," was a faithful, charter member of Freedom Baptist Church. He was a devoted husband, father, "Poppa," brother, uncle and friend. He is survived by his son, Tommy Jarrell and wife, Leiah, a daughter, Lori Jarrell Long and husband, Jeff, all of Rockingham; four granddaughters, Brooke Billingsley and husband, Travis, of Cumming, Georgia, Krista Long and fiancé, William Hunter, of Hubert, Rachel and Kennedy Jarrell of Rockingham; two great-grandchildren, Hunter Wood and Anna Rae Billingsley of Cumming, Georgia; one sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Harold and Priscilla Coble; one brother-in-law, William McIntyre, many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews and numerous special friends.
Poppa loved his family, friends, church, McDonald's coffee, Raider baseball, Washington Redskins and the New York Yankees. He boldly proclaimed his love for his family and especially for his Savior, Jesus Christ. Some of his most memorable and favorite times were spent with his family and friends, at Freedom Baptist Church, Raider baseball games and at McDonald's. He was loved by everyone who met him. His infectious smile, big heart and quick wit was known to many. To know him was to love him!
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2017 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Freedom Baptist Church in Rockingham and other times at the home. The service to celebrate his life will be at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017 at Freedom Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie McLean officiating and interment following at Eastside Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Freedom Baptist Church Building Fund, 987 U.S. 1 North Rockingham, NC 28379.
