JAMES GOSDIN Obituary

JAMES WALTER (JIMMY) GOSDIN It is with heavy hearts that the family of James Walter (Jimmy) Gosdin share the news of his passing on July 31, 2024 in Glen Rose, Texas. Jimmy, the son of JB and Veda (Garner) Gosdin of Rainbow, Texas, was born in 1955 and lived his entire life in Somervell County. His parents were peanut farmers and ran one of the first convenience stores in Rainbow on East Highway 67. He graduated from Glen Rose High School in 1973 followed by one year of study at Tarleton State University. Shortly after, he met the love of his life Kathy J. Carter, of Jasper, Texas, and they married in 1976. In 1978, while working at Sky Bow Ranch he acquired a strong desire to operate his own bulldozer. It wasn't long before he bought one and began his life's work owning and operating Gosdin's Dozer Service. For over 46 years he dug large stock ponds, cleared land, built and repaired dams, landscaped ranches, constructed city streets and roadways, and completed subgrade work for countless homes and commercial buildings both locally and statewide. There is hardly a piece of land in Somervell County that he wouldn't have had a story about. Jimmy also owned, operated, and partnered in several businesses throughout the years: Glen Rose Redi Mix supplied concrete beginning in the late 1980's contributing to projects like The Texas Amphitheater, Glen Rose High School, Paluxy Street, Stadium Drive, and Nancy Drive; Squaw Creek Materials provided a range of crushed rock for over twenty years; Glen Rose Hose Supply made custom fittings for machinery; J&J Sand and Gravel provided raw materials; and Green Acres Venture continues to develop real-estate properties throughout the area. Jimmy loved his community, spending countless hours serving with EMS and Somervell County Volunteer Fire Department. He also consulted with Fossil Rim Wildlife Center to improve their roadways, for which Gosdin Scenic Drive is named. He never met a stranger and lived generously. Most importantly, he gave his life to Jesus and accepted Him as his Lord and Savior. His one hope in life was for everyone to come to Jesus and he spent his last days sharing the gospel at every opportunity. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his three children and their spouses: Tami & Ben Valentine, Kristie & Josh Simpson, and Tony & Cecily Gosdin; nine grandchildren: Ashlyn, Noah, and Daniel; Caleb, Hannah, Grace, and Levi; Brook'lyn and Tanner; his sister Judy and her husband Willie Shipman of Rainbow, Texas; and his sister-in-law Betty Gosdin of Glen Rose, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents JB and Veda Gosdin, sister Barbara, and brother Tom Gosdin of Glen Rose, Texas. A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday August 10th at 3 pm at Calvary Church of Granbury, in Granbury, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Somervell County Cancer Support Group, Reel Recovery, or Calvary Church of Granbury.

I'm late responding to the news of Jimmy's passing but did not want to go on without saying goodbye.
How many times has it been said that someone made the world a better place? By now it may be perhaps a bit of a cliche, but in reference to Jimmy Gosdin, the phrase is truly appropriate. He was of great character and generosity. He always gave from the heart and truly cared about others. He touched us with his genuineness and his indomitable spirit. He loved and was loved. He was truly a person of great abilities and achievements, I admire and respect the man he became.

I was greatly blessed to have known him and look forward to meeting him again in Heaven. For now however, the loneliness of losing someone I loved so much makes my heart ache and my tears fall freely. I know that he is now with the Lord so my tears are for all of us he left behind and our momentary separation. No one can take his place nor should they try. Jimmy was too unique. He was an awesome friend and will remain in my heart, thoughts and dreams forever.
