Paul Hernandez, 43, passed away April 9th at 3:15pm. It is with a heavy heart that Paul has left his family and friends. He will be sorely missed by his loved ones, his wife Claudia and son Christian age 17. His mother Clara and brother Johann of Orlando flew in praying to make it in time.
Paul was a man of faith and was a fighter. He battled his cancer until the very end. He never gave up the fight because in life he was never a quitter. We prayed and told Paul to hold on and by the grace of God, Paul did just that for his Mom and brother. Paul always kept a positive outlook and was upbeat and truly amazing with his bravery in life and with his cancer fight. Paul grew up in Chicago; he was a good son to his late father Jonathan and his mother. He admired his parents and the sacrifices they made for him for a better life. He was a great older brother always looking after his younger sister and baby brother.
Paul graduated high school from Senn Metropolitan Academy in 1989. He joined the Navy on his 18th birthday. Paul served in the U.S. Navy from 1989-2007. He was an AW2 and was stationed in Misawa, JA during Desert Shield & Desert Storm. He was stationed at NAS North Island & NAS Jacksonville. Paul was proud of his Aircrew Wings and being an airman in the Navy. He was a squared away, class act service member and was proud to have served his country. Paul worked as a U.S. Postal Carrier at Laguna Niguel, CA branch. He enjoyed his mail route which included a retired community. Many elderly awaited their daily mail and to see his smiling face. Always intrigued with law enforcement Paul joined the U.S. Customs & Border Protection on his 36th birthday and was assigned Wellton Station. Being older than most at the Academy he was nicknamed, Grandpa. But, he never fell out on PT runs because he never quit anything he did in life. Paul was an Agent that took his job out in the field with great responsibility. Paul respected the BP and his fellow brothers & sisters. He had your back out there, no matter what the cost; he would have fought for the lives of his BP family. Paul's family at home meant the world to him. Everything he did was for his wife and son. He was a loving husband for 23 years. He sacrificed many things for his family and time was one of them. He was a worker and a provider. He was a passionate father who loved his son more than words can describe. He raised his son to be the fine young man he is today. His son was his pride and joy. Paul was involved in his son's life from being his soccer coach for many years to being involved in his son's passion with RC cars. Paul was there every minute possible for his son, helping out at the RC track. Paul's death is a great loss to not only to his family, friends, Border Patrol family, but to the Yuma community. Wake services will be held at Yuma Mortuary 775 S. 5th Avenue on Thursday, April 16, 2015 from 6-9pm. A funeral mass service will be held in his honor at Immaculate Conception Church 505 S.
