I am a former student of Leo 's who graduated from East in 1971. I had Mr. Scherr for two years in advanced math at East. While in college at both UW and University of Northern Colorado I routinely checked in with Mr. Scherr for occasional math help as well as sharing my own plans to become a math teacher. I knew in first grade that I was going to be a teacher, loved both math and English, but it wasn't until I had Mr. Scherr that my decision would be made. We three girls (the only girls in his class) decided to go get a cinnamon roll from the cafeteria before wandering into math class on a day that Mr. Scherr was absent. We were very tardy and proud of it. When Mr. Scherr returned to school, he made the decision to punish the three of us . His punishment was to have each of us teach our Calculus class for a day or so. First Melissa, then Mary, and then finally me. The other girls taught for a day. He let me teach for a week. I LOVED IT!!!! My mind was made up and I ended up teaching math for 37 years. I will be forever grateful to Leo for that. As I started teaching I also married and introduced my husband to Mr. Scherr- he didn't like him and as it turned out, neither did I and divorced him. We kept in touch over the years, chatting about our bad backs and such; He kept me up on the lives of his kids and the health of his wife before she passed. When my twin brother was dangerously ill with kidney problems, Leo somehow found out and came to the hospital to visit my brother. I will love Leo forever for that alone.
