Paul was kind enough to write the foreword to a space history book I co-authored, and although I had an enjoyable email correspondence with him, I sadly never got to meet him.
Last week, a year after his funeral, I finally passed through High Rolls and Alamogordo. I stopped to look at his induction plaque at the local space museum, saw his orchard, and talked to someone who knew him at the local store. It felt like I finally got to both meet him and say goodbye properly, by visiting the place he had made his home. Thank you, Paul, for your wonderful stories and support.

I have thought about you and your family over the years. I visited you with Mike in the mid- to early-1980s when you lived in El Paso. I see that Michael has passed away also. I am so sorry for the losses in your family.

I knew Paul when I was a reporter at the Alamogordo Daily News. Paul worked there for a while as a reporter, too. He was gracious and full of humor. It didn't ever matter what was going on around him - whether people were angry or excited or unhappy - he was always calm. He didn't let other people wobble his life raft. He was always steady and enjoyed the sunshine even if it was raining outside.
On Sunday, August 2, Apollo 12 and Skylab astronaut Alan Bean was in Tucson to sign copies of his books. He spoke with each visitor for several minutes, and during my time I mentioned to him that I had worked with Paul at the ADN and that Paul had written a very nice obit about Pete Conrad after his motorcycle accident. Captain Bean and Pete Conrad along with Dick Gordon made up the Apollo 12 crew. Captain Bean remembered Paul and was extremely touched that he had written the obit about Pete Conrad. I learned from Captain Bean that Paul had died.
I read "Into that Silent Sea" about a year or two ago, which is a book about the early space program. Paul wrote the Foreward. Both the Foreward and the book were excellent, and I thought about writing a letter to Paul about it, but procrastinated. Now I wish I had written that letter.
My heart goes out to you, Jan. God bless.

Dear Jan and family,
I wish to express my deepest sympathy to you all. Paul was probably the most interesting person I knew. I didn't know him very long, but I too will miss him as will everyone at the Senior Center where we met. God bless and lift you up in your sorrow.

I never met Paul, only knew him through e-mail, but was absolutely charmed. We were in touch because I am the keeper of the Washington Star alumni list. Paul sent me stories about the old days at The Star. I've posted a notice about him on The Star's website. I so cherish the notes I received from him. My heart goes out to his family on the loss of such a lovely man.

Paul made an impression on people, even when they did not realize it. I'd hear his voice expressing approval every time I bought some Stilton cheese, even through the years. He was the man who encouraged me to write, publishing my first poem. He might have been pleased to see how far I came. He genuinely WAS an original simply because he was, and not because others had gone before him. His voice narrated an era. Goodnight, Paul - I'll think of you tonight with respect and gratitude when I look up at the stars. My life is better, even today, for having known you then.
