Cleto Escobedo Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 12 to Nov. 13, 2025.
Cleto Escobedo III, the consummate saxophonist, bandleader and longtime house-band musical director for the late-night talk show "Jimmy Kimmel Live!," died November 11, 2025, at the age of 59.

Mr. Escobedo was born August 23, 1966, in Las Vegas. He and host Jimmy Kimmel first met as children when Kimmel's family moved across the street from the Escobedo family in Las Vegas. Their friendship endured for decades, eventually evolving into a professional collaboration.

Escobedo's musical career began early: following in his father's footsteps, he embraced the saxophone as a young teenager. Before his late-night TV role, he toured with major artists including Paula Abdul and Marc Anthony.

With the debut of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" in 2003, Kimmel tapped his childhood friend to assemble and lead the house band, known as Cleto and the Cletones. Escobedo guided the band nightly for more than two decades, bringing jazz, funk, rock and soulful horn-driven energy to the show's musical backbone. His father, Cleto Escobedo Jr., also played in the band, making their collaboration a rare family musical pairing on national television.

Kimmel remembered his friend on Instagram, writing, "To say that we are heartbroken is an understatement. Cleto and I have been inseparable since I was nine years old. The fact that we got to work together every day is a dream neither of us could ever have imagined would come true." In a monologue on the show on the night of Escobedo's death, Kimmel broke down in tears, paying tribute to their shared childhood in Las Vegas and their decades of work together.

Escobedo's passing leaves a void in the late-night music world. He is survived by his wife, Lori, and their two children; his parents; and his many bandmates and collaborators. His music will continue to resonate nightly, on-air and in performance halls alike.

Cleto will be sorely missed by my wife, carla and myself Ron because we have been very good friends of his since the days when he used to play at the baked potato and then in Santa Monica at the West End he was ourfavorite person in the band of Cecilia Noel and the Wild Clams for many years. I will always remember his kind eyes and soft voice and demeanor. I hope to attend a service to pay my respects to him and his family.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences on the passing of Cleo. I did not know him personally other than watching him and his orchestra play nightly on the Jimmy Kimmel Show.

On the night Jimmy paid tribute to his friend, I thought what a beautiful friend he was. It´s hard to meet good people in this world. I´m glad he made a difference. May your musical legacy live on. Rest in peace, Sir.

My condolences to the Escobedo family. Cleto was an amazing musician, and a marvellous person. I'm just a fan of Jimmy Kimmel Live! and heard the band play every show. The love and fun that the band shared was obvious, even to a distant TV viewer, and his heart and spirit has made the world a better place.
I'm so grateful that I got to hear him play. My hope is that the pain will leave you quickly, and the love and wonderful memories will be there always.

I was in 6th Grade with Cleto at Kit Carson Sixth Grade Center in North Las Vegas, Nevada.

Though we weren´t close friends, I definitely did not have any conflicts with him, as kids can sometimes have with other kids.
And I definitely remember him getting along well with our teacher.

Blessings to his family.
