When Anne taught our son, she was very supportive. During a politically difficult time in Marietta, we were on the Square in Marietta standing up for gay rights. Bobby held a sign that said I love my gay uncle and GOD does too. I was a little concerned about how Bobby would be treated by others when he got to school. Annewalked up to Bobby, gave him a hug and said she was proud of him. That made everything a whole lot stressful for himbecause of her acceptance of what he was standing up for. Such aloving, kind and loving woman

Dear Mike,
I am probably the last one to hear of your wife's passing. I simply don't read the paper much anymore, but I do usually check the obits. I remember the look you always got on your face when you talked about your wife; I know she was special, obviously to many, many people, but most of all to you.
You and I knew each other for a short time, but I remember your jokes with Larry W. about him smoking at your wedding and how much you two liked that comic named "Tater".
I read the column about your parents home and have always thought that your best work, in spite of all your medical knowledge, etc, came from stories of the heart.
And that's because you are a deeply caring man and the kindess and love you have comes through.
I remember your James Brown doll. I hope you took it home to help you "feel good". Any man who lived with a Tina Turner-Jack & Diane lover has to know joy. Don't forget it,ever. Best to your children. I lost my father when I was 28 and I've always wondered what an adult-adult relationship would have been as we grew older together. I'm older now that he was at the time of his death. Time goes on and it does heal, especially when one has the fun, loving memories that you do.

To the King family: On october 24, 2008 while sitting in a restaurant; a teacher from Hollydale which is mrs. Anyanwoke was talking to me concerning my nephew. I asked a question; which was if Mrs. King was still teaching at Hollydale, after i heard that she had retired a while back. Not knowing that she had passed away. It gave me great joy to know that i had the opportunity to meet mrs. king for 9 years while teaching my daughter Ariel Mckay, who is now a senior in high school. And the following year teaching my baby daughter Kaylan Mckay 8 years ago, who is now a junior in high school. Mrs. king really enjoyed watching them every morning as they entered into school, and was very pleased by the way they were dressed, with the matching hair bows. And from the Mckay family to your family with our deepest sympathy.

Mr. King - I just finished reading the wonderful story that you wrote in the paper, having to stop more than once to wipe the tears away. My heart continues to go out to you, Katie, and Patrick, for the loss of such an important person in your life. Mrs. Anne was such an amazing woman, always so joyous in everything she did, and the best part was that her happiness was brilliantly contagious. I can't begin to say that I understand what your family is going through, but please know that mine and my family's thoughts and prayers are always with you. And Katie, I know that we've lost tough since college, but should you ever need anything, I'm here for you. All my love - Kati

Mr. King. I did not have the pleasure of knowing your wife, and I am truly sorry about that. She must have been a wonderful person. I too lost my companion a year ago, and the tears still come. I have no words of comfort for you, but I know that my faith and the presence of God in my life got me to this point. Some days I had to remind myself to breathe, and sometimes I still must do that. But most days I can smile when I think of him and not burst out into tears by the mention of his name or when I see another couple holding hands. This piercing pain does not go away, but I do know it will become more manageable in time. Your expression of your love for Mrs. King and your heartfelt words on the life and death of her were so touching and I could feel your pain thru my own. May God bless you, and bless all of us that have lost loved ones and those that will.

Mr. King,
I found your article a true example of love expressed through journalism at its highest form. Those of us not lucky enough to have known your wife certainly can appreciate the wonderful woman she was and the relationship you shared.
Unfortunately, I have experienced the scene with the doctor you described with both of my parents and my father in law. With the exception of one physician, my family and I felt surrounded by compassion and support from the medical staff in this most awful of decision times. I at least knew what the wishes of my loved ones were, so that helped some---but, the enormity of it all was crushing.
While I can appreciate the no-nonsense opinion of Mrs. King about death and afterward, I found much comfort in knowing where my loved ones were and how much "better off" they were. I am still surrounded by their spirits (or souls, as you said) and can think of them often with smiles and love through the tears that can still come.
Thank you for sharing your story so eloquently with those of us who cannot express ourselves as well. God Bless you and your family; you are making Anne proud.

Mr. King, today I read your article about your wonderful wife, Anne in the AJC obituary column. It was the most profound article I've read in a long time. Your love for Anne was apparent in your tribute to her. God bless you. It must have been a great relationship that you two shared, and thank you for sharing Anne with the ones of us that did not know her.

I met Anne about 7 years ago, at the shop. Any time she was there, you knew it. The sound of laughter, and happy voices would always lead you to Anne. Its no wonder everyone wanted to be around her. We became good friends when we shared a space in a Roswell Antique shop. Then we had an opportunity at the Marietta square. We planned, and decorated the front window of a shop and bought items for our booth, there. We really enjoyed each others company. Sharing our problems, and sometimes just to "vent" to each other. For a few years, she called me several times a day, and we saw each other, almost every day. It was always fun to be with Anne. We shared a love of gardening, decorating, and annimals, among other things. She was one of the first people I met when I was a new dealer at "One of a Kind". She did such a wonderful job at the shop, making it better for all of us. Its hard to grasp that she isnt comming back. I think of her every day, and miss her.

Anne was one of those people who brightened any place she entered. She was kind, encouraging and helpful. I did not have the privilege of knowing her long, but in the short time I did know her she left her mark. She will be missed!

We I began renting a booth at One of A Kind, it was next to Ann - she immediately made me feel welcome. Over the years she was ALWAYS the one to make it fun. I loved it when my work day was with Ann - she kept me in stitches. After I left the shop and came in to visit, she still made me feel like part of the family. I will miss her, her incredible sense of humor, and her warm smile. Thanks Ann!

Everything Anne did, she did with her whole heart and soul. When she retired from teaching she took over a floundering antique shop in Marietta and she single-handedly brought it back to life. She handled the 35 or so women in the shop as easily as her third graders (which was sometime more difficult). Like her teaching, this was also a labor of love for her. She put her indelible "Anne King" stamp on everything she did. The shop and everybody in it felt her presence and her passion for making it a better place and they also feel her absence everyday now. I was very fortunate to have had her as a friend. She was honest, funny, kind, irreverent and had a great sense of humor. I am thankful for the time I had her in my life. She was one of a handful of friends I could count on for anything, and I miss her every day. If we can take anything positive away from this let it be that we each treat each other as if it might be the last time we will have together, because it just might be.....

Mike, Katie, and Patrick,
I first met Anne at Hollydale Elementary School. We soon discovered that we not only taught school together but also lived in the same community - west Marietta. Her positive influence in both places will always be remembered. Anne was a true and devoted friend to her coworkers, her students, her neighbors, and her community friends. She was always full of encouragement, laughter, and love for all of us. I have wonderful memories of such fun "Hollydale Hooter" times that only Anne could really make happen. Playing tennis on the Charlton Forge team with Anne was always made to be more of a fun time than a competition because of Anne. And those Kentucky Derby parties were some kind of fun - this GA girl had to learn that you were suppose to cry at the song. Yes, Anne had many, many friends because she was such a fun-loving, giving friend to all of us. We will miss her!

We are really going to miss Anne. I will never forget the many traditions she started. Like when a new teacher came to third grade we had to visit a special tree in Marietta, the derby, and her special rendition of "Jack and Diane". Anne you were cut from a special cloth, we will miss you and we will always keep a special place in our hearts.

I was blessed withth twenty-one years of much laughter, a few tears, stimulating conversations and so many wonderful times. I can't imagine what my life here would have been like without Anne. She was the pot of gold at the rainbow's end. Her love, kindness and generosity benefitted many (especially me). My thoughts, prayers and love are with Mike, Katie and Patrick. Adios my friend, save a place for me.

How can I possibly sum up a friendship that has produced thousands of wonderful memories?
When I think of Anne I think of the many gut splitting laughs.......
-of the comedy of the retired Hollydale Hooters-watch out 'little bitty buddy'
-of hitting a tree with a canoe in a S. GA blackwater river in mid January
-of a ZZ Top concert where we held real tickets with seats that did not exist
-of dancing to Tina Turner's 'Proud Mary' as a reward for good behavior in our side by side 3rd grade classes
-of celebrating the Kentucky Derby at the King's annual 'party of the year'
I think of tender moments....
-of listening to a child read an insightful piece of writing
-of watching Jane Austin movies
-of visits from former students sharing their successes
-of watching baby sea turtles hatch on St. George Island
-of watching our own children grow up, leave the nest, and become successful, happy adults
Anne was an incredible teacher, an awesome friend, a loving wife and mother, a defender of what was right and fair, an organizer extraordinaire, and she was always, always, 'butt faced' honest. I'll always love her for that.

I subbed for and taught with Anne at Hollydale. She was truly the heart and soul of our school. I have shamelessly copied Anne's ideas and tried to use her enthusiasm in the classroom even to this day. She appeared to enjoy life to the fullest and shared her contagious personality with everyone. When I think of her, I smile. Even though we had lost touch since her retirement party, I will miss her and am saddened to know that she is not with us anymore.

Anne was my best friend from 8th grade through high school. When my family moved from Jeff to Cincinnati our junior year, I was devasted to leave her; she was the sister I never had. We decided to go to ISU together, and although we requested to be roommates, that didn't happen. Over the years we lost touch, until we located each other on the internet. We caught up quickly, as though no time had passed, and IM'ed and emailed, enjoying sharing our current lives and laughing at our goofy selves as teens.
My mother called me today with the news of Anne's passing, having read the column by your friend in the Louisville paper. Ironically, I am on vacation in Florida. Anne will never really be gone to me. I've spent my adult life without her, and yet with her always by my side.

Anne was a dear friend, a phenomenal teacher, and one of the most generous people I have ever known. She was loved by her friends and her students, and when she retired I told her that I missed her every day at school. Now I will miss her every day for the rest of my life. Her family and her friends, her students and her customers at the shop are all very lucky to have witnessed this shooting star, too soon gone, but never forgotten.

To Anne's Family,
I just wanted to say how sorry I was to hear of her death. I did'nt run around with Anne in school but after reading the things people have said about her life it is my loss. I know that she is in heaven right now saying nobody should worry about her because she is living a good and perfect life now. I know the loss is hard on the people left behind but she accomplished what God wanted her to do here on earth. Family, please have comfort knowing she is even more perfect than before.
God Bless

Knowing Anne, makes me want to TRY to be a better person. She has already had an impact on my day to day response to the way I react to the world as I see and experience it. She makes me want to be honest in my relationships, with myself and with others. No b.s. There is too little time for b.s. We are really not here that long.
Thank you Anne. Nita

Mrs. King was my 3rd grade teacher at Hollydale Elementary School. This year I graduated in the top 5% of my class. I credit Mrs. King with planting the desire to be successful, and also to be myself. Her Friday boogie days were the highlight of our week - she let us express ourself in our own way. I will never listen to Tina Turner without smiling - remembering her dance. I guess at the time, we didn't know how that fit into the teaching we needed. Now we do.
When I saw the obituary, I was very sad. We all lost a true teacher last week. One I will never forget. My sympathy to the entire King family and all those she touched.

She was energy. Anne exuded a passion for living that animated everyone around her.
She was a leader. We were strengthened by her courage; her constant expression of what was good and right.
She was a teacher. Children were drawn to her like magnets. She viewed with clarity their beauty within. She exposed to each child the only thing she could see; their strong suits. She taught children to love themselves. Her forte was making learning fun.
She was a friend. A great, fun-loving, wonderful, kind and devoted friend.
She will be missed, but she lives forever in our hearts.
I feel so blessed to have known you, Anne. Love, Darlene

Years ago as a 'green as grass' para professional I was assigned to work in Anne's classroom. She immediately saw the value in another pair of eyes, ears, and hands to assist children needing extra help. It soon became clear to me that while all children were important to Anne, those hurting and needy children were her specialty.
Later on as I knew Anne in ways other than the classroom I saw that she tackled every endeavour with enthusiasm and heart. Passion, professionalism and great humor were the footprints she left to bless all of our lives, and lead us to follow her example.

Anne was my son's third grade teacher and gave him a love a reading that lasts to this day. She was a gift to Hollydale and the entire school system. My son is now 19 and when he read about her passing he cried. Anne leaves behind a legacy of love and learning.

around 10 years ago i was a student at Hollydale and was blessed to spend my 3rd grade year with Mrs. King. She instilled in me a love of writing that to this day burns within. She was the first teacher who really made a difference in my life, and the first who really made learning a joy for me as a student. I will never be able to thank her or her family for what they have done for me as a student, and more importantly, a person.

Anne was a great friend and teacher. She was always happy, fun, and excited about her family, friends, and students. It was a joy teaching with her at Hollydale Elementary. She always had her music going at the end of the day and she rocked along with the kids. She was one of a kind and the Queen of the Hollydale Hooters. Anne you will be sorely missed. 17 years ago, Anne was my son's 3rd grade teacher. When he had a hard time learning, she was encouraging and loving. When his grandfather died, she showed him compassion, when he was quoted in the newspaper as a young activist of a particular cause, she told him she was proud of him. He continues to this day to have his journal that she encouraged her students to write in every day. Every entry had a comment of praise, encouragement and also taking him to task when he was off task. People like her who love unconditionally and share themselves with others are a rare breed. We are both all the better in having had the pleasure of her in our lives during that imporant time in my son's education.
