Christopher Byrne Obituary

AUBURN < Christopher M. Byrne, 55, formerly of Potter Road and Washington Street, Auburn, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2007, after a long illness. Chris was born and raised in Auburn, graduating from Central High School in 1970. Chris was diagnosed with diabetes when he was 7 years old and dealt bravely with the disease until the end of his life. He graduated from BOCES LPN program in 1975, and worked for many years at the County Infirmary and then Auburn Memorial Hospital. He left the hospital to work at Auburn Correctional Facility. Prior to being forced to retire for health reasons, worked at Miller Bottling Co. For many years, Chris was an active member of the Throop Fire Department. He, along with his daughter Debbie, was one of the first graduates of the Leadership Cayuga program. He enjoyed hunting and fishing as well as a "cold beer and a good steak dinner." He had many nicknames, among them GINK and CRISPY. He was full of fun and loved his Irish heritage. Chris was very appreciative of the help given to him by the Auburn Fire Department and Ambulance Services for the past decade. Chris is survived by his children, Debra Byrne of Syracuse, Kimberly Byrne of Miami, Fla., Robert Byrne and his wife, Amele, of East Syracuse; his father, Edward J. Byrne and wife, Winnie, of Lexington, Ky.; his sister, Carol and husband, John Cambareri of Auburn; his brother, Eddie Byrne of Denver, Colo.; his aunt and godmother, Joan Schafer of Auburn; the mother of his children, Jeanne Byrne of Auburn; and his brother-in-law, Tom Geherin of Auburn. Chris was predeceased by his mother, Pat Byrne in 1980; and his brother and sister, Kevin Byrne and Connie Geherin in May and June of this year. He enjoyed his many nieces and nephews, including the Byrnes of Denver, the Colellas of Auburn and Denver, and the Albertis and the Rescotts of Auburn. The staff of St. Joseph"s Palliative Care Unit and Hospice of CNY lovingly tended to Chris during the last few weeks of his life. In lieu of flowers, the family strongly encourages donations be made in Chris"s name to that Unit (see above), 301 Prospect Ave., Syracuse, NY 13203; or to Hospice of CNY, 990 7th North St., Liverpool, NY 13088. Family and friends are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, at the Heieck-Pelc Funeral Home, 42 E. Genesee St., Auburn. Private services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family. Chris never let life get him down. He will be sadly missed. Dear family, what you have gone through and why is not something for us to understand but what I do see is the strength you all have and that has given me strength to deal with Chris's death as well as Connie and Kevin. We were all a circle of frineds at different times in my life and they all touched my heart in different and wonderful ways. I am glad to have known them and to know the rest of the family. Here's to the days when I used to be at the Byrne house more than my own. You are so missed but I know your giggling in heaven with Willy and letting us know you're all just fine. The picture at the wake with Willy and Chris is how I see them eternally. I pray that gives the family the power to get through these hard times knowing they are all smiling down on us in more peace than ever. Love ya and miss ya always, Chris. Ann Hamilton

Chris' family would like to thank everyone for their kind words of sympathy. Chris has completed his journey on this earth, but it continues on into the next with his siblings and the rest of his family at his side. Someday we will all be reunited, until then.............

Dear Byrne family,
I am so sorry for all the pain and loss that life has brought your way in 2007. Three beautiful family members in one year is beyond belief and people are amazed at your ability to cope. Kev and Connie and now Chris, my gosh. Chris had a big heart and loved to have fun and enjoy life despite his own life long health conditon. The last time I saw Chris was at my own brother Willy's wake and funeral. My family was so happy to see Chris early in the morning at Ferrell's for our final, intimate good byes the day of the burial. My mother was especially happy to have Chris with us that day as he also stayed with us for the trip to St. Joe's and a gathering at Springside. Chris showed great compassion and love even when he himself was not well at the time. We all love Chris and wish everlasting peace to him and his family.

To my dad and my aunt and my grandfather,
This has been a terrible year, with far too much tragedy for any family to have to go through. But hopefully we can all try to remember the good things in life, and not to become to absorbed with the bad. And may we all remember Chris, Connie and Kevin as the people we love.

my uncle chris,
A true to life soldier, who went to battle with a smile on his face, fought through adversity and challenge, and came out the other side with that same smile!!! i can only respect his courage, even in the face of death, he kept his humor, laughing until his last breath!
i will always remember the Christmas's we spent at your house, the summer days out on your land, the great trips we took together, your quick wit, and your great laugh!!! i love you, and you will truly be missed!!!
chris, say hi to connie, kevin, stella, great grandpa, and grandma for us!! i hope they all were there to welcome you with open arms!!
mom, stay strong, you are truly an angel, who helped guide chris, kevin, and connie toward the light, with comfort and no fear!! im sure they all appreciate what you have done!!!i love you, and i hope i can be as strong and as good hearted as you someday!!! i love you!!!!

Dear Eddie,

No words can describe how saddened I am for your loss of 3 siblings within 6 months. No family should EVER have to experience so much grief, and so close together is just incomprehensible.

But, I know that you are a VERY strong person, and your strength will get you thru this horrible year.

I didnt have the pleasure of meeting your brothers and sister, but from all the great stories you have told me about them, I know that they were amazing people. And I know how much you cared about them, and how special they were (and will always be) to you.

Treasure all the great memories you have of them, and know that Kevin, Connie and Chris are watching out for you!

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

All my love,
Michelle

Things I learned from Chris:

You can have a life threatening disease and still lead a normal life (well- relatively normal!)

You can have bad things happen to you and still believe that God loves you- no matter what.

You can make choices, and stick with them, despite pain and suffering.

You can end life's journey bravely, with smiles and jokes- "We'd only be married about a week"

You can really believe in angels coming to get you.

Chris's journey has only just begun- free of disease and heartache.....Bon voyage Chris!!! We love you.....

To the Byrne family,
Once again my heart goes out to those of you who remain to mourn the loss of another family member. I just cannot imagine what that must feel like and I pray that once the intial loss has passed, that the memories and love hold you strong and together.

To the family: There are no words to express the pain you must be feeling with yet another devestating family loss. It has been many years since I last saw Chris, but at that time he gave me a picture he had found of the 2 of us in the playpen together. We were probably around 2. My, how the years have flown by and now it is time to say good-bye. My thoughts and sympathty are with your entire family.

My Dearest Byrne Family,
This year has been rough, but it is almost over. Thank God! When I think of Chris, I remember the time that Little Eddie and I took him to Royal Gorge. It was a beautiful day and we all had so much fun. We all laughed and had a great time. That was many years ago and eventhough that was the last time I saw Chris I will have fond memories of him. We will all miss him. I am sorry for the loss this year has brought. They all will be missed.

Kathy and Eddie

I Marianne, never met him but I still believe that he was fun. I am sorry for the loss of daddy's family. This year has been tough for everyone, but next year will hopefully bring new tomorrows.

Uncle Chris,
I'm so sad that I will never be able to hear your laugh again...
Ever since I was little your laugh was the thing that stuck with me. I am so glad I was able to talk to you before you left us...but I know that you are happy where you are. They were waiting for you; your mom, Aunt Connie, and Uncle Kev...and I know they will take care of you now. We will all miss you so much, but I know you met death with a smile upon your face. I think you were ready after so much and after this year. My mom and I will always be here for Deb, Bob and Kimmie...and I know they will miss you more than you know. Please give my mom strength...especially after this year, she only has so much. Grandpa too, it's been a hard year for everyone.
I will miss you Uncle Chris; your laugh, your joy of being with family, and your charm. I will never forget the last Christmas we were all together...ever. You taught me more than how to make the fan noise...you taught me that life is too short...we have to appreciate every moment we have, every moment that we are healthy. You remained strong until the end, and we all are so proud of you. Until we meet again....*I love you Uncle Chris, RIP Crispy*
