Evelyn's Obituary

Evelyn (Gettemy) Landman, 94, of Mount Independence, Pa. went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 28, 2011. She resided with her youngest daughter, Marion, her loving and dedicated caregiver for the past ten years. She was born March 3, 1917 in the mountains of Dunbar Township, the sixth child of the late Samuel Morris and Louella Mae Coleman Gettemy. Evelyn completed her eighth grade education at the Gettemy School, the property near her beloved childhood home which had been donated for the use of a public school by her grandfather, Silas Gettemy, in 1888. She attended Dunbar Township High School and before marriage worked as a housekeeper for various families in Connellsville and also worked as a clerk for several firms in Uniontown. Following her marriage, she became a full-time homemaker and devoted the remainder of her life to her family. Much of her time was spent in the kitchen cooking, baking and canning. Those who were fortunate enough to experience her home-cooked meals, Saturday morning buckwheat breakfasts or incredible family Sunday dinners are sure to have fond memories. She joined the Cove Run Free Methodist Church in 1950 and was currently the oldest member. For many years she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School classes and assisted with the children's programs. She never had any formal musical training, but enjoyed playing many old-time hymns on the organ "by ear." There was never a greater example of a selfless life so well lived and she maintained her trademark smile to the very last days of her life. She was predeceased by the love of her life, her husband of sixty years, Wendell D. Landman, on April 18, 1999. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Preceding her in death were her siblings and spouses: Grace Gettemy (who died in infancy), Bertha (James) Scott, Elizabeth (Arthur) Scott, Minnie (James) Smithley, Catherine (Enoch) Zebley, Mary Belle (Paul) Zebley, George (Genevieve) Gettemy and Mildred (Arthur) Jacobs; brothers- and sisters-in-law from the Landman family (who were just the same as brothers and sisters to Evelyn): Zelda (Carl) Goodwin, Donald (Eleanor) Landman, Violet (Charles) Coleman, Robert Landman (wife, Jean, survives), Evelyn Rosenberger (husband, Ray, survives), and Ruby Fields (husband, Edgar, survives); and a grandson-in-law, Earl "Stretch" Swaney III. Evelyn is survived by two daughters: Shirley (Walter) Matthews and Marion (Joe) Jurczak, both of Mount Independence; three sons: Wendell Robert "Red" (Joyce) Landman, Raymond Edward (Faye) Landman and Ronald Tracy (Kandy) Landman , all of Mount Independence; thirteen grandchildren: Wendell R.
