Family,
I cannot believe it´s been 17 years since Joan´s passing. I still have fond memories that make me smile when I think of her, like right now. Again, miss her presence. She would be amazed at all of the many changes in the Kendall Square neighborhood, as well as the Sloan building that was built years later. Just recently, her old view of the Eastgate Graduate student housing has been demolished.

I just found out about Joni's death through one of our mutual friends Joan Campitelli. I know her death happened several years ago, but I wanted to say that I have some fun memories of our friendship. I am so sorry for your loss. Fondly, Laurie Haapanen

2/13: We had a lovely gathering here at MIT MSA this afternoon in honor of Joan. So much has changed over the last year, not the least of which has been adjusting to life without her! We imagined what Joni might have thought about some of these. I often think as I go through the day, "Joan would have think that was hilarious!", or sometimes laughing, "Joan would hate that." Gradually time might begin to erode that empty space that she used to fill in all of our lives.
We miss you Joan!
Greetings and best regards to the entire Wingo clan -- and give a kiss to Dexter.
-Shiba.

Joni's family gratefully thanks you for your many expressions of loving concern for Joni and her family (2-legged and 4-legged). It has been a very difficult year. We first focused on finding good loving homes for her 2 dogs, 7 cats, 2 birds and many, many aquariums of fish and frogs. I am very pleased and know Joni would be grateful to know that we found wonderful loving homes for all of her animal family. Each day and all the special occasions during this year brought another phase of the grief process as we tried to adjust to missing her. As the first anniversary of her death approaches we will face that challenge by honoring her memory and continuing to care for her beloved critter family. We would love to keep in touch and hear from you and especially to share "Joni Stories" . . . as she continues to make us laugh through our tears.
Thank you again and Take Care - Chris

I hope the family see this. I am sorry I am so late, but I will miss Joni as well. I will never forget her duck she walked on a lease. Joni was always fun to be with. Take care and hope to see you this summer at camp.

Joan and I worked together for the

last 3 years because my

Vice President,

Debasis Mitra at Bell Labs is

one of the 11 Area Editors of

the Operations Research Journal.

She/I had a great repore over the

phone and through email doing our

hard works for this fabulous journal. She was always an

encouraging person too, when the

deadlines hit and we got through

them encouraging each other along with our own life's events. She

was very efficient, too.

My deepest

sympathy to the family left behind

in their grief.

We take comfort that she is

in Jesus' arms in heaven, where

those that believe in Him will

also be there together one day.

I had a memorial service for her

at my church, Nativity of the

Blessed Virgin Mary Orthodox Church,

So. Plainfield, NJ this past

Sunday, 2/19 in her memory.

Vichniyu Pamyat Joan! Which

means memory eternal!

I was deeply saddened when I received the news of Joan Wingo’s untimely death. Joan has been the Managing Editor of the Operations Research for over six years, working first with Larry Wein and more recently with me. Though I have known her for a short time, I found her to be efficient, responsive and a pleasure to work with. She will be greatly missed by all of us at MIT and in the Operations Research community.

I worked with Joan as an area editor for Operations Research. She was one of my favorite people to work with at the journal; very smart and with a good sense of humor and a sweet and kind disposition. I will miss her. My sincerest condolences to her family and loved ones. It's a great loss for us all.

I had the pleasure to work with Joan on the editorial board of Operations Research for the last 5-6 years. It was indeed a privilege for all of us on the editorial board, as well as for the OR communicy in general, to have Joan serving as OR's Managing Editor. She will be sorely missed and fondly remembered. My condolences and well wishes to her family.

My sincere condolences to the Joan's family. Over the last four years, I was fortunate to work as area editor for our journal (Operations Research) with Joan and to benefit from her professionalism and project management effectiveness. But, most of all, she was always there ready to help with a smile and a joke. In the end, it's those memories that matter most. I will miss her-- Jan

I worked with Joan over the past few years as an Area Editor for Operations Research, and it was such a pleasure to interact with her. She was a very kind, efficient, and responsive person, and a true delight to work with. She will be greatly missed, as a colleague and as a friend. My prayers and well-wishes for her and her family. Best regards, Hanif.

We have such great memories (oh, the stories we could tell) of times spent with Joni - at Hall Place, at Franklin Avenue, at the Hall Camp, at Reunion, on Christmas and at birthday parties. We love her and will miss her.

For the last six years, Joan and I worked together on a daily basis managing a journal. She was incredibly competent, which made my part of the job much easier than it might have been; for that, I will always be grateful. Although I was not at MIT for most of these six years, our running email jokes and occasional phone calls always brightened up my day. And one of the main highlights of going to our annual professional meetings for the last five years has been to sit down and grab a coffee with Joan, and catch up on MIT and Dexter and our respective lives. She was a gentle soul and a genuine friend, and I will miss her dearly.

Joan made a huge impact on my life. I'm not sure if she fully realized how much her efforts helped me over the years. Without her influence, I am certain my life would not have taken the positive direction it has taken and I would not be experiencing my current happiness. I will remember her kindness, continue to value the significant role she played in my life... and put to good use all the positives she taught me.

Even after seeing it in writing, I can't believe it. One of the stories I have heard recently was how Joni always knew she could run away to Georgia. Well, she didn't run away to Georgia, she just ran to catch those that have left us. I always looked forward to the summers growing up because I knew we would be spending time with you all. Joni may have been younger than us but she hung right in there with whatever we were doing. My heart and soul will be with you especially Friday and Saturday.

I just wanted to share with you all how much I will miss Joan's knowing, slightly quizzical smile, her unfailing friendliness, her love of her pets, her amazing wealth of knowledge and information that she was always willing to share, and her graciousness when, on those rare occasions that I failed to follow her advice and inevitably suffered as a result, she would never say "I told you so" but instead give me a warm smile. Our corner of MIT was a little more friendly because of Joan, and we all feel her absence.

I enjoyed Joni's company and her love for dogs. Our conversations centered mainly around Dexter and Tasha, my dog. Dex will sorely miss Joni and along with those who knew and cared for her here at MIT. I'll always remember the happy and animated look on Joni's face when she talked about Dexter.

Needless to say, I was shocked to hear the news of Joan's passing. Just that morning I had been thinking about her and planned to stop by to say hi, as I did from time to time. I will definitely miss her. Besides discussions about her animals - Dexter being my favorite, I will remember our first conversation when I told her that I noticed her sneakers/shoes always matched her outfit. For a while I followed suit. The 3rd floor of Sloan will never seem the same to me.

Georgia Perakis

February 16, 2006

Joan will be greatly missed by all of us on the third floor at Sloan. She was always caring, supportive and very capable. I in particular, as a female professor will never forget how she would go out of her way to help me when I was starting out my career at MIT. I will always remember Joan and will miss her a lot. Sloan will definitely not be the same without her. This is such a loss for all of us
