Henry A. "Harry" Harvey Battle Creek Henry A. "Harry" Harvey, 97, of Battle Creek, died Monday evening, October 27, 2008 at the Battle Creek Health System. He was born in Battle Creek on September 27, 1911, the son of Dr. Henry William and Frances Winifred (Miller) Harvey. Harry attended Battle Creek Central High School and furthered his education at Ferris State Institute, Michigan State University, University of Southern California and finally Tri-State University in Angola, Indiana, receiving a Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1937. Harry served his country as a member of the United States Coast Guard and the United States Navy during WWII, from 1938 1945, serving aboard the Attack Transport ships, Joseph T. Dickman and the E.W. Eberle. While aboard he was part of the landings at Fedela, North Africa, Gela, Sicily, Naples and Anzio, Italy and sailed in the Pacific Theatre. He then joined the Coast Guard Reserve, completing 26 years of faithful service and retiring as a Captain. Harry retired from the Kellogg Company in 1976 as Assistant V.P. of engineering after more than 38 years, serving in many different positions with the company throughout North America. Harry married Corabelle Scramlin in Battle Creek on October 15, 1938; she survives. He is also survived by 2 sons, James Harvey of Virginia and Richard Harvey of Battle Creek; a daughter, Marjorie (George) Robertson, Jr. of Battle Creek; three grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Harry was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Helen Owen and Frances Neller. Harry was a life-member of the First United Methodist Church and served on many boards and committees at the church. He was one of the five founding members of the Battle Creek Yacht Club in 1946 and is a member of the Kellogg 25 Year Club and Retirees Association, the Battle Creek Sailing Club, a 50-year member of the Kalamazoo Power Squadron and the Sons of the American Revolution. Harry was also very active at the Burnham Brook Center from the time of its inception, serving on the Board of Directors, senior advisory committee on membership and the service and delivery committees. He was also a former member of the Battle Creek Engineers, the Michigan Engineering Society and the Airstream Travel Club. Harry had a great love for the water and spending time with his family. He enjoyed sailing and sailboat racing on Goguac Lake and participating in many racing events both locally and away. At the request of the family, they will receive friends 5:00 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Farley-Estes Funeral Home. Funeral services to celebrate Harry's life will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 31st at the funeral home with Dr. Donald R. Ferris, Pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating.
