Dorothy Shafer Obituary

Dorothy A. Shafer Fair Lake Dorothy A. Shafer, age 87, of Fair Lake, Delton, MI, died Friday morning, December 12, 2008, at the Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Residence, Battle Creek. Dorothy was born on March 10, 1921 in Chicago, IL and was the daughter of William and Christine (Dammann) Bruckner. She was the owner and operator of an Arts and Crafts Business she ran out of her home at Fair Lake. Dorothy traveled extensively to area shows and festivals to show her wares. She was known as "The Green Thumb Lady" and/or "The Weed Lady!" Dorothy volunteered for many years at the Leila Arboretum of Battle Creek. She was a member of the Redemption Lutheran Church of Battle Creek. In 1958 in Chicago, Dorothy was united in marriage to Wendell C. "Wendy" Shafer and he preceded her in death on December 18, 1998. Surviving are her two sons: David L. (Cathy) Richmond and Robert S. (Brenda) Richmond, both of Battle Creek; a grandson: David (Jamie) Richmond of San Diego, CA; a stepgrandson: Chris Potter of Escondido, CA; four stepgranddaughters: Andrea (Dave) Wygant, Kristy (Keith) Davis and Tina Ludwick, all of Battle Creek and Erica Morris of Bellevue, MI; and by eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband: Leslie W. Richmond in 1955; her parents; and a brother: Henry Bruckner. At the request of the family, friends may call on Tuesday, December 16th, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, Battle Creek. The funeral service to celebrate Dorothy's life will be held on Wednesday, December 17th at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Karl N. Strenge, Pastor of Redemption Lutheran Church of Battle Creek, officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, Battle Creek. Memorial contributions in Dorothy's honor may be made to the Leila Arboretum Society, 928 W. Michigan Avenue, Battle Creek, MI 49017.
