Salvatore Yannitelli Obituary

Salvatore A. Yannitelli, M.D. Battle Creek Salvatore A. Yannitelli, M.D., 91, of Battle Creek, died peacefully Friday, January 23, 2009, at Battle Creek Health System, due to complications of pneumonia. Dr. Yannitelli was well known in the community as a caregiver whose charismatic personality lit up a room. He took special pleasure when he would encounter people whose babies he delivered years before. He also possessed extraordinary diagnostic skills from which many of his patients benefited. Sal was born in Garrison, New York (on the banks of the Hudson River across from West Point Military Academy) to Donato and Gelsomina (Venaruso) Yannitelli on September 9, 1917. He grew up in Garrison and graduated from high school in Peekskill. He did his undergraduate work at Cornell University and received his Doctor of Medicine from Long Island College of Medicine. A diagnosis of tuberculosis interrupted his surgical internship at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. While being treated in upstate New York, his attending physician knew of work being done by Dr. Arthur Kimball Jr. at the Kimball Sanitarium in Battle Creek. This recommendation eventually took Sal to Battle Creek for continued care, after which he himself remained as the Director of the TB Clinic. Sal also completed an internship in Northville, MI. In 1949, he began his private practice in Urbandale, retiring in the late 1980s after 40 years of practice from his 710 North Avenue office. Sal married Anita K. Huebner in Brooklyn, NY on December 18, 1940. He was preceded in death by Anita, his wife of 58 years, on December 24, 1998; by two sisters, Teresa and Mary; and two brothers, Albert and Donato. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Christine Yannitelli and Dennis Manske of Kansas City, MO; a son, Thomas Yannitelli of Orlando, FL; a son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Susan Yannitelli of Phoenix, AZ; a grandson, Massey Yannitelli, a grandson and his wife, Dominic and Katy Yannitelli and a granddaughter, Meagan Yannitelli; and a special friend, Betty Leitch of Battle Creek. Dr. Yannitelli was a 50-year member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, Chief of Staff at Community Hospital, served on the Michigan State Medical Society Board of Directors, lifetime member of the Rotary Club, longtime member of the Battle Creek Country Club, member of the Knife and Fork Club, and member of St. Philip Catholic Church. He was recently awarded the Lifetime Membership of the American Medical Society. Sal enjoyed golfing, flower gardening, growing tomatoes and playing bridge. He also enjoyed boating and fishing at Gull Lake where the family often rented a cottage and where Sal taught his children and grandchildren to fish and water ski. He loved making memories with his family. Additional sources of enjoyment included fishing with the guys in Canada, skiing at Boyne and in Colorado and more recently, writing his autobiography. And of course, he loved to dance his skill was well known by many women who he twirled to the music. Sal was an engaging, compassionate, positive, outgoing individual, full of vitality and warmth. At the request of the family, friends are invited to attend the visitation between 3:00-6:00 p.m. Thursday, January 29th at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home. Father Charles H. Fischer will celebrate a Mass in memory of Sal at St. Philip Catholic Church at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 30, 2009. A gathering for friends and family will be held at NorthPointe Woods following the Mass. Memorial contributions in memory of Dr. Yannitelli may be made to the Battle Creek Community Foundation or to St. Phillip Catholic Church. Personal messages for the family may be placed at www.farleyestesdowdle.com In Sal's own words, he wishes everyone, "Goodness, kindness and love!"

Dr. Yannitelli was my doctor since childhood until he retired. I was then old enough to look for a doctor on my own, only to find there were none out there like the kind, smiling, always knew you, doctor I had experienced. I have thought of this beloved man often over the years and truly missed that feeling of caring he always administered to his patients. My deepest sympathy to the family, he is a kind soul who will be missed by many. Touching many lives in a positive way is a real blessing, and this is one man that has done this just by entering a room. Bless You...

my parents went with dr. soon after he opened his practice and he was our family dr. untill he retired. he was a kind and friendly man. we have never had another dr. like him. my parents were poor and when i had to br hospitalized for a month with an infection he was my dr. years later wen my parants passed i found the hospital bill for the stay. it was $300. i brleive he had some thing to do with that. when i became an ececutive with a local co. and had my annual physical with him he would drive the office nurses crazy by taking me into his office and lecturing me on the evils of smoking (while he was smoking) and then spend 30 t0 40 mins getting updated abut all the family. my wife was from another country and was nervous on her first vist to the dr. he made her fell right at home and she looked forward to seeing him. our daughter loved him also. we are sorry he passed on but know he had a long and wonderful life and brought happiness where ever he went. with the greatest respect dick and jo ann hayes tucson az.

Dr. Yannitelli was my dr. for many, many years. When I was 18 years old he even took my tonsils out. I always felt comfortable talking to him and having him treat me for any ailment. He would walk into the room with that big smile, and asked how I was doing. He was such a caring, and wonderful person. I have yet to find another dr. that I like as well. He always made you feel special, and that you were the most important person to him during your visit. May you rest in peace, Dr. Yannitelli

Impressionable, infectious, caring, quick with his wit & humor and a smile--Sal Yanitelli, MD, will not be forgotten. On behalf of the entire membership of the Calhoun County Medical Society--of which he was a regular attender--our deepest sympathy to Dr. Y's family and more friends than he could count! We are all blessed by the long and extraordinary life of this remarkable human being! Even ordering a cake, a fond story could be told of him! Thank you, Dr. Jones, for celebrating his contributions to the Calhoun County Medical Care Facility!

I knew Sal through Betty Leitch and her daughter Sally, and I always found Sal to be warm and fun to be with. I enjoyed our conversations about his life growing up in the Hudson Valley. He was an engaging person, full of life, a good bridge player, and I know he will be missed by his friends and family.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to all of the Yannitelli family at the loss of your wonderful father and grandfather. We will always remember Sal from Dom and Katy's wedding and how, at 90 years old, he out-danced most of us! May you find comfort in knowing that he lived life to the fullest and was so loved and respected by all.

The comment about Dr. Yannitelli lighting up a room with his charismatic personality is an understatement. He was absolutely infectious with his smile and upbeat attitude on anything. He was a wonderful neighbor and I wish his family my deepest condolenses.

Dr. Yannitelli brought my son into this world on Jan. 27, 1967, he was suppose to go skiing but because of the worse snowstorm in years he was stuck at his office on North Avenue, I arrived at community hospital by amblance and he skied over. That night he delivered my son and 8 other baby boys and one little girl. He cared for us for many years.
He was a wonderful doctor and treated his patients as friends he will be missed.

Take comfort in knowing that now you have a special guardian angel to watch over you.

Dom and family,
Please accept the Torvik family condolences. Your Grandfather was a very dapper, sharp man. I was fortunate to meet him at yours and Katy's wedding, even had the chance to have a dance with him.
I know you will miss him, but he is in good hands.

He was our family doctor for several years. My daughter-in-law talked Doc into letting her have a natural childbirth with my son present, he told them he was impressed because it was his first experience. (1971).
He was truly missed when he retired and will be for many for a long time.

Back in the 80's, I worked as a housekeeper for the Yannitelli's. In the beginning, I addressed him as Dr. Yannitelli but he insisted that I call him Sal. He was so down-to-earth and one of the most pleasant persons I had ever met. I will always remember his beautiful smile and kind nature. May you rest in peace, "Sal".
